Sean P. Canning '80 was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987 and played four years of varsity basketball at Saint Anselm. When Canning graduated in 1980, he was the leading scorer in the history of the school’s basketball program with 1,447 points and a then-record 471 assists.

In his senior year, he was elected captain and averaged nearly 17 points a game, which led the Hawks to an ECAC Championship title where he was named the Most Valuable Player. During his career, he was twice named to the All-New England team in basketball and was selected 11 times on the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll.

He played in the 1980 New England Basketball Coaches All-Star Game and was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Sacred Heart Holiday Classic.
