Athletics Hall of Fame
Phillip Shacklette, professor of Business and Economics at Saint Anselm, was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982. Following a standout cross country and track career at Manhattan College, Shacklette came to the Hilltop and began urging college officials to initiate a cross country and track team.
In 1962, the college's first cross country team was formed and he was named head coach. His most successful seasons as head coach came in his final few campaigns when the great national surge of interest in running brought the Hilltop plenty of worthy recruits.
He was awarded the Varsity Letter Merit Award for his contribution to Saint Anselm athletics upon his retirement as coach in 1979. Shacklette taught at Saint Anselm for more than 20 years and served as chairman of the Business and Economics Department from 1969 until his retirement from full-time teaching in 1975.
An on-campus cross country meet, named in his honor, enters its 39th season of competition in 2020.
