Patrick McCarthy '56, a member of the 1984 Hall of Fame class, played four seasons of basketball at Saint Anselm, averaging 12.6 points per game through his career. At the time of induction, he ranked 16th on the all-time scoring list with 1,023 points.
 
During his senior year, McCarthy made 133 free throws, placing him in the school record books. As testimony of his outstanding leadership role on and off the court, he was named captain in his junior and senior years, when his teams compiled a record of 35-10, while overall during his career they were 56-28.
