He was a four-year member of the men’s ice hockey team and currently ranks as the far-and-away team leader in many offensive categories, including career point scoring (210) and career goal scoring (124). McDonough also holds team records for the most goals scored in one game (five) and the most career hat tricks with nine to his credit.

McDonough stands as the only four-time All-America selection in program history and he was the recipient of the Small College Hobey Baker Award during his career. A repeat ECAC Player of the Year pick, McDonough holds the top-two single-season goal scoring marks of all-time (41, 1984-85; 37, 1983-84) and went on to play professionally with the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Islanders and the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League.
