Athletics Hall of Fame
Michelle Hughes ’94, competing for the Hawks women’s soccer and softball programs, was inducted into the Saint Anselm Athletics Hall of Fame with the rare accomplishment of induction for two sports. Captain of both sports in both her junior and senior seasons, she was also named team Most Valuable Player for both sports her senior year.
Throughout Hughes’ soccer career, Saint Anselm registered a 25-6-5 mark in the NE10, including four-straight Northeast-10 Conference Final Four appearances, the NE10 Championship in 1991 and the program’s first ECAC Division II tournament selection in 1994. At the time of her graduation, she stood as the all-time program leader in season shutouts, career shutouts and minutes played. At the time of induction, her 1.04 career goals-against average was a school record.
Over Hughes’ four years on the softball diamond, Saint Anselm went 69-56 including a 40-32 mark in league play. The Hawks qualified for their first ever NE10 postseason championship tournament in 1994 and qualified again in 1995. Her .447 batting average in 1993 remained the highest single-season average in Hawks' history and her career batting average of .395 remained one of the top all-time at the time of induction.
She retired as the all-time runs scored leader and stood fifth at the time of induction, remaining among the top five all-time in career RBI and among the top 10 in singles. She became just the fourth player in team history to record over 100 career hits and remained in the top 10 all-time for the category.
Hughes was selected as a First Team All-Conference selection for softball field and Second Team All-Conference for soccer as a sophomore. She was chosen as a First Team All-Conference and First Team All-New England All-Star her junior soccer season. Her senior season, she earned not only First Team All-Conference and First Team All-New England, but topped it off with a First Team All-American selection.
She completed her remarkable four years of achievement as the Anselmian Athletic Club’s Female Athlete of the Year.
