Athletics Hall of Fame
Joseph O’Brien '74 was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1974, O’Brien graduated as a four-year men’s ice hockey player. He captained the Saint Anselm ice hockey team in both his junior and senior years. Upon graduating, O’Brien ranked sixth on the College’s all-time assist list with 103 assists among his 156 points.
In his freshman year, he exploded with 25 goals and 40 assists in only 18 games. His total of 65 points that year and the 40 assists were the long-time freshman records at Saint Anselm. As one of his contemporaries said in describing Joe’s dedication to the game and his two year tenure as captain of the team, “No one was more tenacious on the ice as Joe was; we looked to him for leadership and he gave it. He gave of himself totally and completely to the game.
