Grogan's 1932 freshman squad went 6-0, downing powerhouses Holy Cross and Boston College and allowing only one touchdown during the season. In 1933, football took on collegiate varsity status at Saint Anselm and Grogan stepped up to the challenge, making himself known as a strong tackler.

By 1934, Grogan was selected as captain of the football team and was named to the All-New England Team. The team turned in a 6-3 that year. Grogan was also selected to the Associated Press All-Eastern Team and was named to All-Opponent Teams by the University of New Hampshire and Northeastern University.
