NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Edward Onyia was named Northeast 10 Conference Rookie of the week for a league-best fourth time this season, the league announced Monday.
The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team won both of its NE10 contests this past week, as the Hawks are riding a five-game win streak. The Hawks remain in first place in the conference with a 10-1 record in league action, posting a 17-4 record overall. This marks the Hawks best start to NE10 play since the 2018-19 season, when they began their league slate with an 11-1 record.
In Wednesday night's 80-67 win on the road at Southern Connecticut State, Onyia scored 11 points with four rebounds, two steals, and an assist. The Hawks returned home to Stoutenburgh Gym on Saturday, defeating Adelphi 77-75 in overtime, as Onyia scored 22 points, a new career-high, shooting 8-13 from the field and 4-6 from three-point range with five rebounds.
Onyia's averages for the past week were 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game, with shooting splits of 52.4/44.4/77.8. The four-time NE10 rookie of the week has scored 10+ points in five straight games, and he is the NE10's second-leading scorer among freshmen, averaging 10.8 points per game this season.
Onyia leads the team in three-point percentage at 39.0%, while being second in free throw percentage at 83.7%, tied for second in rebounding at 5.6 per game, third in field goal percentage at 53.9%, and sixth in scoring at 10.8 points per game in 23.1 minutes per contest. Onyia's four Rookie of the Week awards are tied for the most in the NE10, matching Saint Michael's Quintin Floyd.
The freshman from Leicester, England, has scored in double figures in 14 of his 20 games this season and ranks sixth in field goal percentage, eighth in free throw percentage, and ninth in three-point percentage in the Northeast 10.
Onyia and the Hawks hit the road to Waltham, Mass., taking on Bentley University (13-6, 6-4 NE10) at the Dana Center on Wednesday, February 4, at 7:30 p.m. in another NE10 contest.
