NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Edward Onyia earned his league-leading third Northeast 10 Conference Rookie of the Week honor of the season, the league announced Monday.
The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team won all three of its NE10 contests this past week, with Onyia appearing in two of the three games off the bench, as the Hawks remain in first place in the conference with an 8-1 record. Overall, the Hawks are 15-4 on the season, having won three straight games.
In Monday's 86-78 win over Southern Connecticut State University, Onyia led the Hawks with 19 points on an efficient 8-9 shooting performance, also going 2-3 from deep with six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. This was Onyia's best shooting performance of the season (88.9%), with at least five shot attempts.
The Hawks followed up Monday's win with a 100-86 defeat of Assumption University, the most points scored by Saint Anselm this season. Onyia contributed 11 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench, shooting 4-7 from the field, 1-3 from long range, and 2-2 from the line.
Onyia ranks second on the team in rebounding at 4.3 per game, third in field goal percentage at 54.2%, and sixth in scoring at 10.2 points per game. He is also shooting 38.0% from three-point range and 85.0% from the line in 22.6 minutes per game.
The freshman from Leicester, England, has scored in double figures in 12 of his 18 games this season and ranks fifth in field goal percentage and ninth in three-point percentage in the Northeast 10.
Onyia and the Hawks will travel to New Haven, Conn., to take on Southern Connecticut State University (8-9, 4-5 NE10) on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the James Moore Field House.
