Baseball Splits Twin Bill at American Int’l

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split a road twin bill against Northeast 10 opponent American International College Saturday afternoon at Richard F. Bedard Field. The Hawks fell 13-7 in game one before holding off the Yellow Jackets in game two, 2-0.

Game 1 – American Int'l 13 (9-8), Saint Anselm 7 (4-9)

Highlights
  • Sophomore George Slauson set the tone offensively, going 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Coleson Kaluza went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two runs batted in, and two runs scored.
  • Connor Rumph recorded two base hits and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Peter Fischer went 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
  • Junior Caden Smith got the start for the Hawks, his fourth of the season, pitching 4.1 innings, retiring five batters, and walking two.
  • Sophomore Jake Boudreau entered the game in relief, making his fifth appearance of the season, pitching 0.2 innings and striking out one.
  • Sophomore Jake Schoenberg was handed the ball for the final three innings, striking out four Yellow Jackets and allowed just one run.
How it Happened
After holding Saint Anselm scoreless in the top of the first, American International struck first in the bottom half of the inning, using a leadoff triple to right center followed by an RBI single down the left field line to take a 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets extended their advantage in the second inning. A leadoff single set the table before a two-run home run over the right field fence pushed the lead to 3-0.

Saint Anselm responded in the top of the third with a five-run inning. After a leadoff single, a two-run home run cut the deficit to one. Later in the inning, a triple and an RBI single tied the game at 3-3. An RBI groundout gave the Hawks their first lead, and they added another run on an error to make it 5-3.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Saint Anselm added to its lead in the fifth with an RBI single to go ahead 6-3.

American International answered with a decisive nine-run bottom of the fifth. The inning featured a two-run single and an RBI double to tie the game at 6-6 before a series of hits, including a single and a double, put the Yellow Jackets back in front. A bases-loaded single later in the inning capped the rally and gave American International a 12-6 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings before the Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out single to left center.
Saint Anselm got one run back in the ninth on a solo home run to right center, but could not complete the comeback, falling 13-7 in game one.

Game 2 – Saint Anselm 2 (5-9), American Int'l 0 (9-9)

Highlights
  • Junior Mavrick Bourdeau went 2-for-4 with a run batted in, a run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore Jackson Powers had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in.
  • Junior Andrew Chenevert made his fourth start of the season, pitching six scoreless innings, striking out four batters and walked three.
  • Freshman Finn Ramseyer entered the game in relief, his fifth time this campaign, striking out two batters and earned his first save of his collegiate career.
How it Happened
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, with Chenevert striking out two during that span.
The only runs of the game came in the top of the third inning. With two outs and a runner on second, Bourdeau delivered an RBI single down the right field line to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Powers followed with an RBI double to center field, extending the advantage to 2-0.
Chenevert and Ramseyer combined to close out the contest, recording four strikeouts and securing the shutout victory.
