NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Edward Onyia of the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team was named Northeast 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for a league-best fifth time this season, the league announced Monday.
Saint Anselm put together a 2-0 week to seize control of the one-seed in the NE10 heading into the final stretch of regular season play. The Hawks are 19-6 with a 12-3 record in conference play, with three games remaining. Saint Anselm sits two games ahead of second-place Bentley and Pace, who are both 10-5.
In Tuesday's 87-81 overtime win over Southern New Hampshire, Onyia scored 11 points with four assists and three rebounds, shooting an efficient 4-5 from the field, 1-2 from deep, and 2-2 from the line.
Onyia followed up his solid outing on Tuesday with 15 points in Saturday's 95-84 win over Franklin Pierce, also grabbing seven rebounds with three assists and two blocks. Onyia has put together 16 double-digit scoring efforts this season and ranks second among freshmen in the NE10 in scoring at 10.6 points per game.
Onyia ranks second on the team in three-point percentage at 36.8%, third in free throw percentage at 83.1%, third in rebounding at 5.5 per game, third in field goal percentage at 52.7%, and fifth in scoring at 10.6 points per game in 23.5 minutes per contest.
The freshman from Leicester, England ranks seventh in field goal percentage, 10th in free-throw percentage, and 12th in three-point percentage in the Northeast 10.
Onyia and the Hawks hit the road to Worcester, Mass., taking on Assumption University (14-10, 9-6 NE10) at Andrew Laska Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. in another NE10 contest.
