NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Edward Onyia earned his second Northeast 10 Conference Rookie of the Week honor in the past three weeks, the league announced Monday.
After Onyia earned the same honor two weeks ago while classmate
Hayden Johns won the award last week, the Hawks have now claimed the past three NE10 Rookie of the Week awards.
Onyia helped lead the Hawks to a 2-1 week of non-conference play, defeating Bridgeport on the road, 85-72, besting Post, 85-70, before falling at Felician on Sunday, 91-77. Over the three-game stretch, Onyia averaged 13.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while shooting 48.1% from the field and 40% from long range, and 78.6% from the free-throw line.
In Tuesday's win over the Purple Knights, Onyia recorded his second career double-double, scoring 16 points while corralling 11 rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench. Onyia followed it up with an 11-point performance against Post on an efficient 5-7 shooting day in just 19 minutes before tallying 14 points and eight rebounds in the Hawks' loss at Felician.
This year, the freshman forward is averaging 10.3 points per game, as he is one of six Hawks averaging 10+ points per contest. His scoring average is second among freshmen in the NE10, only trailing Johns, who sits at 10.9 per game. Onyia is also in the midst of a six-game streak with 10 or more points.
Onyia's 5.9 rebounds per game rank second on the team behind sophomore
Jovan Ristic, who is second in the NE10 at 9.5 per contest. Onyia is 14th in the NE10 in rebounding overall but first among freshmen.
Onyia has appeared in all 11 games off the bench this season, slashing 50/37.5/83.3 shooting percentages in 22.1 minutes per game.
Onyia and the Hawks will travel to Garden City, N.Y., to take on Adelphi University (9-1, 2-0 NE10) at the Adelphi Center for Recreation and Sport on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 3:30 p.m.
