Four Hawks Eclipse 15 Points in 85-72 Win at Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CONN.  – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team defeated Bridgeport University, 85-72, in a non-conference game at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium on Tuesday.
 
Highlights 
  • The Hawks have now won five straight meetings with Bridgeport, including 10 of the past 11 matchups. All-time, Saint Anselm is now 30-25 in a series that began in 1948.
  • Saint Anselm improves to 7-2 on the year, and the Hawks have now won four straight road contests to improve to 5-1 (1-0 neutral) away from Stoutenburgh Gym.
  • Freshman Edward Onyia recorded his second career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench. Onyia shot 4-10 from the field, 2-4 from three, and 6-7 from the line.
  • Junior Jack Medalie led the Hawks with 18 points on an efficient 4-7 shooting night, also going 2-4 from three and 8-13 from the charity stripe with three rebounds and an assist.
  • Sophomore Jovan Ristic had 17 points and six rebounds, making six of his seven shot attempts.
  • Senior Josh Morissette knocked down five three-pointers en route to 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds.
  • Sophomore Will Davies continued to feed his teammates, dishing out eight assists. Davies leads the NE10 and all of NCAA Division II in assists at 7.9 per game.
  • Saint Anselm outshot Bridgeport from the field, 49.1% (26-53) to 38% (37-71), and from three-point range, 40.9% (9-22) to 31.8% (7-22). The Hawks also held the edge in rebounding, 43-39.
How it Happened
 
The Hawks fell behind 5-0 to start the game, but a pair of threes from Medalie helped fuel a 9-2 run that put Saint Anselm in front by two, 9-7. Onyia completed a three-point play to put the Hawks up four, 15-11, but the Purple Knights hung around, retaking the lead with five straight points, 16-15.
 
Saint Anselm would go on an 11-2 run with Morissette knocking down his first three-pointer of the game to give the Hawks some breathing room as they led by nine, 30-21. Bridgeport responded again, pulling within one possession, 30-28, and they kept things close for the rest of the half as Saint Anselm led by just one point at the break, 38-37.
 
The Hawks scored the first six points of the second half, and Morissette hit a trio of three-pointers while converting on a four-point play to lead the way as Saint Anselm held an eight-point edge, 59-51.
 
A 12-0 run capped off by an Onyia three-pointer on the break catapulted the Hawks to their largest lead of the game, 15 points, 71-56, but Bridgeport countered again to make it a six-point game, trailing 73-67.
 
Ristic grabbed an offensive rebound and finished under the hoop, followed by Morissette's fifth three-pointer of the night to put the game out of reach late in the second half, 79-67.
 
Saint Anselm would go on to win by a final score of 85-72.
