PREVIEW: Baseball concludes regular season with a pair of doubleheaders at Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team wraps up its 2023 regular season with a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division twinbills at Assumption University on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6.

The Hawks were swept by Bentley University in a four-game series that concluded on Apr. 29. Saint Anselm sits at 10-32 on the season with a 6-14 record in NE10 play. The Hawks currently sit in fifth in the Northeast Division standings entering the final weekend of the regular season.

The Greyhounds dropped three of four against American International in their four-game series concluding play on May 1. Assumption is sixth in the standings at 12-31 overall and 5-15 in conference action.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) and junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) lead the Hawks with .286 and .284 batting averages respectfully. Doran ranks fourth on the squad with 38 hits while Williams is second at 42.
  • Senior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) leads Saint Anselm with 43 hits this season and is third on the team with a .279 batting average. Borrelli leads the Hawks with 34 runs batted in in 2023.
  • Borrelli and senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) are tied for the Hawks lead with eight home runs apiece. Panarello follows Borrelli closely with 33 runs batted in this season.
  • Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) is the third Saint Anselm student-athlete with 40 or more hits on the season as he sits at 41 through 42 games played in 2023.
  • Junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) sits on 95 hits for his career, needing just five to reach the 100 mark for his collegiate career.
  • As a team, Saint Anselm has slugged 41 home runs on the season which is fourth most in the conference. That is also third most in a single season in program history.
  • Junior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) leads the Hawks pitching staff with 11 starts this season. The junior also leads Saint Anselm with 63.0 innings pitched and has 57 strikeouts with two complete game efforts.
  • Sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) and senior Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) have made eight and six starts apiece with junior Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) drawing five starts each.
  • French has made 13 appearances for the Hawks this season with seven of them coming in relief. Junior Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) is second on the team with 12 appearances, all out of the bullpen.
  • The Hawks defense sits at a 0.961 fielding percentage which is fifth best in the conference.
SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
  • Jared Berardino leads the Greyhounds offense with a .355 batting average. He is the team leader with 54 hits, 25 runs, 13 doubles, and 42 runs batted in. Berardino is tied for the team lead with eight home runs.
  • Jack Barry is tied with Berardino for the Assumption lead in home runs. Barry is second on the squad with 46 hits and 31 runs batted in while sitting in third with a .311 batting average.
  • Jake Hamel ranks second on the squad with a .321 batting average while Christopher Rabias is fourth at .280.
  • The Greyhounds are second in the NE10 with 51 home runs this season, trailing only Southern New Hampshire who has 67 in 2023.
  • MacGuire O'Sullivan leads the pitching staff with 11 starts with Griffin O'Connor right behind at 10. O'Sullivan leads the Greyhounds with 62.1 innings pitched while O'Connor has fanned 57 batters in 58.1 innings of work.
  • Corey Chiappone and Alexander Meesig are tied for the team lead with 13 appearances in 2023.
  • Assumption owns a 0.953 fielding percentage this season, committing 67 errors in 1,425 chances.
ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION
  • The Hawks and Greyhounds have met 139 times in the all-time baseball series. Assumption leads the series by an 82-56-1 margin.
  • The teams split a non-conference doubleheader from the New England Baseball Complex on Mar. 12. Assumption took game one by a 6-1 score before Saint Anselm claimed game two by a 6-3 score.
