PREVIEW: Baseball to make home debut in four-game series against Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team is set to make its home debut during its four-game series against Saint Michael's College.

The series will feature two doubleheaders, one on Friday, Apr. 7 from Penmen Field on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University. Games three and four will be played at Sullivan Park on Saturday, Apr. 8. Both doubleheaders are slated for start times of 12 p.m.

The Hawks dropped all four games in their NE10 Northeast Division opening series to nationally-regarded Southern New Hampshire from Mar. 29 through Apr. 2. Saint Anselm currently sits at 4-21 on the season with a 0-4 record in conference contests. Following the four-game series with the Purple Knights, the Hawks will host Franklin Pierce University from Sullivan Park starting on Friday, Apr. 14 and running through Sunday, Apr. 16.

The Purple Knights took two-of-four games in the series against Assumption University on Apr. 2 and Apr. 3, pushing the team to 2-16 on the season with a 2-6 record in conference contests. Saint Michael's will play a non-conference game against Middlebury College on Tuesday, Apr. 11 following the four-game series in the Queen City.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) leads the Hawks offense with a .291 batting average and in hits with 23. Williams had an eight-game hitting streak snapped in game two of Sunday's doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire. He did however, reach base safely and score a run in that contest which extended that streak to 16 games.
  • Senior Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) is second on the team with a .243 batting average in 19 games played in 2023. Doran needs just eight hits to reach the 100-career hits mark.
  • Seniors Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) and Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) are tied for second on the roster with 21 hits each this season.
  • Senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) leads Saint Anselm with five home runs and 17 runs batted in, in 2023.
  • Junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) is riding a six-game hitting streak, which is the longest current streak on the team.
  • Junior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) have made seven and six starts apiece. Vaughan leads the Hawks with 38.1 innings pitched and has fanned 38 batters, which also leads the team.
  • Senior Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) has made a team-high nine appearances and collected two saves in 15.2 innings of work. Junior Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) ranks second on the team with eight appearances.
  • The Hawks have a fielding percentage of .954 this season, committing 39 errors in 844 chances.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • Evan Balian leads the Purple Knights offense with a .263 batting average this season. Max Kolifrath follows closely at .259.
  • Balian, Kolifrath, and Ulysses Luciano are tied for the team lead with 15 hits apiece. Sam Cavossa and Andrew Lanthier have recorded 15 hits each in 18 and 16 games played respectively.
  • Balian has hit two home runs in 2023 and leads Saint Michael's with eight runs batted in. Anthony Santosuosso is second on the squad with six RBIs.
  • Jared Duquette and John Luke Cianciolo have started six and four games each on the mound for Saint Michael's. Cianciolo leads the pitching staff with 24.2 innings pitched while Duquette follows closely at 23.1. Both student-athletes have struck out 22 batters this season.
  • Ozzie Rodriguez has made a team-high seven appearances from the bump with six of those appearances coming in relief.
  • The Purple Knights defense has committed 36 errors in 589 chances, good for a .939 fielding percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S
  • The Hawks and Purple Knights have played 57 times in the all-time baseball series. Saint Anselm is 37-20 against Saint Michael's.
  • Saint Anselm took all four games in the 2022 four-game series on Apr. 23 and Apr. 24 by scores of 9-0, 14-3, 4-3, and 19-8.
  • The Hawks have won each of the last nine games against the Purple Knights and have won 13 of the last 15 meetings.
