PREVIEW: Baseball heads to Springfield, Mass. for four-game series at American Int'l

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team will play a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division doubleheaders at American International College on Friday, Apr. 21 and Saturday, Apr. 22.

The Hawks split a four-game conference series with Franklin Pierce University from Apr. 14 through Apr. 16. The Ravens took game one on Friday by a 16-3 score before the Hawks claimed both games of the Saturday doubleheader by 5-4 and 4-1 scores. Franklin Pierce grabbed the fourth and final game by a 16-9 score. Saint Anselm enters the series with American International with a 9-25 overall record and a 5-7 conference record and will be back at Sullivan Park for a four-game series against Bentley on Friday, Apr. 28 through Sunday, Apr. 30.

The Yellow Jackets had a nine-game winning streak snapped by Bentley University on Apr. 19 in a non-conference battle by a 12-5 score. American International enters the pair of twinbills at 15-17 on the season and 6-6 in NE10 games. The team will host Post University on Wednesday, Apr. 26 as part of 10-consecutive home games after hosting the Hawks.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) collected his 100th career hit on Sunday against the Ravens. On the season, Doran leads the Hawks roster with a .279 batting average, totaling 29 hits. His five home runs are tied for third on the squad and his 20 runs batted in are third most.
  • Senior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) are the Hawks leaders with 34 and 31 hits apiece. Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) is third on the squad with 30 hits.
  • Borrelli and senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) are tied for the Saint Anselm lead with six home runs apiece.
  • Joining Doran with five home runs this season are senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.).
  • Saint Anselm ranks fourth in the NE10 with 32 home runs as a team in 2023.
  • Williams is the top Saint Anselm base stealer this season with 12 stolen bases in 13 attempts. Doran has added seven stolen bases in seven attempts which is second most on the squad.
  • Junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) sits on 87 career hits, needing just 13 to reach the 100 career hits mark.
  • Senior Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) was named to the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after firing a one-hitter in a 4-1 win for the Hawks to cap Saturday's doubleheader. That marked the first one-hitter for the Hawks since the 2012 season. French is the Saint Anselm leader with 11 appearances on the mound this season.
  • Junior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) has made a team-high nine starts. Vaughan is 3-4 with 48 strikeouts in 51.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) has started eight games for the Hawks and has totaled 36.2 innings pitched with 25 strikeouts.
  • The Hawks defense is operating at a 0.956. Saint Anselm has committed 51 errors in 1,157 chances.
SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
  • Jackson Haker leads the Yellow Jackets with 46 hits this season. Haker is also the American International leader in runs scored (35), doubles (13), home runs (7), and runs batted in (42). Haker is batting .357 in 2023.
  • Kiernan Caffrey and Brendan Edvardsen have collected 39 and 36 hits each respectively. Josh Frometa, Edvardsen, and Caffrey have all driven in 20 or more runs on the year.
  • Chad Lavelle has stolen a team-high 15 bases in 19 attempts. Ryan Lavelle is second on the squad with 11 swiped bags.
  • Ethan Teixeira and Kaden Peterson have made seven starts apiece for American International in 2023. Both student-athletes have registered at least 34.0 innings of work on the mounds.
  • Jay Chiapetta leads the squad with 35.0 innings pitched and four wins in six starts. Peterson and Chiapetta have fanned 28 batters each.
  • The Yellow Jackets defense owns a 0.955 fielding percentage, committing 50 errors in 1,109 chances.
ALL-TIME vs. AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
  • Saint Anselm and American International have battled 83 times in the all-time series. The Yellow Jackets hold a slight 45-37-1 advantage in the series.
  • The Hawks swept a doubleheader in non-conference action on May 6, 2022, marking the most recent meetings between the two programs. Saint Anselm walked off game one of the twinbill, collecting a 14-13 win before cruising to a 14-2 win in game two.
