PREVIEW: Baseball set for twinbill against Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader against Assumption University from the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. on Sunday, Mar. 11, starting at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The series was originally scheduled to be a pair of doubleheaders but Saturday's game were postponed due to forecasted inclement weather.

The Hawks posted a 1-3 record in four games from the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The team fell to No. 7/10 West Chester, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and D'Youville but captured a 5-4 win over Dominican (N.Y.). Saint Anselm hosts The College of Saint Rose in a four-game non-conference series from Hopkinton High School in Hopkinton, Mass. on Saturday, Mar. 18 and Sunday, Mar. 19, following the twinbill with the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds dropped four of five games played in Florida last week, falling to No. 10 Rollins, Flagler, Florida Southern, and Palm Beach Atlantic. The team did collect a win in their first meeting with Palm Beach Atlantic on Mar. 2. The Greyhounds have three-games scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 18 and Sunday, Mar. 19 against the University of Bridgeport.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) collected a team-high six hits in the four games from Cary, N.C., good for a .353 batting average on the trip. Collins leads the Hawks with a .255 batting average, 13 hits, and 10 runs scored on the season.
  • Seniors Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) posted five hits each at the USA Baseball Training Complex.
  • In Sunday's finale against D'Youville, Borrelli registered his 100th collegiate hit. The senior ranks second on the Hawks roster with 11 hits this season.
  • Panarello drove in six of his team leading eight runs batted in, in the four games and slugged both of his home runs on the trip.
  • Sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) and senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) rank second and third on the squad with .233 and .213 batting averages respectively. Both student-athletes are tied with Collins for the team lead at four doubles this season.
  • Junior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.), and senior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) have started four games apiece for the Hawks. Vaughan has been credited with 20 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched, both of which lead the starters.
  • Senior Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) has made a team-high six appearances this season. French has collected the Hawks lone save of the season.
  • Panarello leads the Hawks defense with a 1.000 fielding percentage in a team-high 83 chances, leading a defensive unit that is operating at 0.944%.
SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
  • Jared Berardino leads the Greyhounds offense with a .429 batting average, registering a team-high 18 hits in 10 games played. Berardino has driven in 15 runs, which are a team-high.
  • Jake Hamel, Emilio Acosta, and Berardino have all hit three home runs apiece as Assumption has slugged 18 round trippers in 12 games this season.
  • Christopher Rabias, Jack Barry, Berardino, and Hamel all have double-digit hits in 2023. The team has recorded 109 hits with 34 of them going for extra bases.
  • MacGuire O'Sullivan and Shea Ryan have drawn three starts apiece of the mound for the Greyhounds. O'Sullivan leads the squad with 12.2 innings pitched while Griffin O'Connor follows closely at 12.0 innings pitched. O'Connor leads the team with 15 strikeouts.
  • Alexander Meesig, John Davis, and Matthew Gardner have all made four appearances for Assumption out of the bullpen.
  • Eric Preston has a 1.000 fielding percentage in 41 chances this season while Cole Durkan has a team-high 92 chances.
ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION
  • Following the doubleheader, the programs will have battled 139 times which will be tied for the second most contests against one opponent. Southern New Hampshire and Saint Anselm have also battled 139 times while the Hawks have battled Bentley on 144 occasions.
  • Assumption leads the series by an 81-55-1 margin and took three-of-four in the spring of 2022.
  • The four-game series in 2022 was played at Gill Stadium in Manchester, N.H. and the Greyhounds won each of the first three games between Mar. 26 and Mar. 27. Saint Anselm concluded the series with a 14-2 win which snapped a 15-game win streak in the all-time series for the Greyhounds.
