PREVIEW: Baseball hosts Stonehill to conclude NE10 slate

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team hosts Stonehill College in its final Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division series of the 2022 season.

Friday's contest will start at 3 p.m. from Sullivan Park while the doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 30 will start at 12 p.m. from Gill Stadium. On Sunday, May, 1, the Hawks will honor their class of 2022 with a pregame Senior Day ceremony at Sullivan Park.

The Hawks posted their first four-game road series sweep of an NE10 opponent on Apr. 23 and Apr. 24, downing Saint Michael's College in both doubleheaders. With the wins, the Hawks improve to 18-20 on the season and 11-9 in NE10 Northeast Division play. Following the four-game series with the Skyhawks, Saint Anselm will host American International College in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday, May 6 from Sullivan Park to conclude the regular season.

The Skyhawks dropped three of four games to Franklin Pierce University between Apr. 22 and Apr. 24 which brings them to 15-24 overall and 4-12 in league games. Stonehill concludes its season with a four-game series against Bentley University, starting on Thursday, May 5.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks 18 wins this season are tied for seventh most in a single season, tying the 2013 squad who was the last to reach the mark. The last time a Saint Anselm team recorded at least 11 wins in a conference schedule came in 2013 when that team posted 13 wins.
  • The 2022 squad has scored 256 runs this season which is fourth most in a single season. The team needs just one home run to tie the program record for single season home runs, which was set in 2001 at 45. Saint Anselm has also recorded 232 runs batted in this season which is fourth most in team annals.
  • Graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) led the Hawks with seven hits each in the series against the Purple Knights. Pezzolla drove in 10 runs across the four game series while Clough posted a team-high four doubles.
  • Pezzolla leads the team with 12 doubles and ranks second with 29 runs batted in.
  • Junior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) notched six hits with nine runs batted in, all in Sunday's doubleheader. Doran was five-for-five in game two, needing just a triple for the cycle while driving in eight runs which is a career-high.
  • Senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) ranks fifth in the NE10 with a .394 batting average. His 11 home runs are tied for the league lead while his .760 slugging percentage is sixth-best in the NE10. The senior has logged 52 hits this season which is third-highest in the conference and his 39 runs scored is fifth. Maurice also ranks fifth in the league with 39 runs batted in.
  • Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) ranks second on the team with a .341 batting average. Borrelli has scored 30 runs while driving in 24 and has accounted for 21 extra base hits this season (11 doubles, four triples, six home runs).
  • Freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) allowed just three hits in eight shutout innings of work while striking out eight to grab his fourth win of the season against the Purple Knights. Betty is tied for the team lead with nine starts and is the team leader with 48.1 innings pitched.
  • Seniors David Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) and Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, Mass.) and sophomore Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) collected the other three wins for the Hawks over the weekend.
  • Junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) registered one save and leads the team this season with three saves.
  • Sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.), Mosseau, and Betty have all made double-digit appearances this season for the Hawks.
  • Saint Anselm has a .960 fielding percentage this season which is sixth best in the NE10. The team has committed 49 errors in 1,232 chances.
SCOUTING STONEHILL
  • Blaine Lidsky leads the Skyhawks offense with a .382 batting average, recording 55 hits in 144 at-bats. Lidsky is tied for the conference lead with 11 home runs this season and is tied for third in the league with 41 runs batted in. Lidsky has 12 doubles, which leads the Skyhawks and his two doubles are tied for the team lead.
  • Jack Marshall and Trey Ciulla-Hall are both batting over .300 this season. Both student-athletes have scored 16 runs, hit two home runs, and driven in 19 runs.
  • Noah Lucier ranks second on the team with 41 hits while Matt Farragher is second in the team with 10 doubles and 26 runs batted in.
  • Peter Haas leads the Skyhawks pitching staff with 43.0 innings pitched while Luke Marshall follows closely with 40.1 innings of work. Marshall has started nine games for Stonehill while Haas and Jonathan Rice follow closely with seven starts each.
  • Haas is averaging 10.47 strikeouts per nine innings
  • Matt Tyman has made a team-high 15 appearances with five other student-athletes making 10 or more appearances this season.
  • Stonehill defensively ranks fourth in the conference with a .963 fielding percentage. The team has had 1,308 chances which is third most in the league and has made 48 errors.
ALL-TIME vs. STONEHILL
  • Upon conclusion of the four-game series the Hawks and Skyhawks will have met 123 times. Stonehill is 95-24 against Saint Anselm all-time.
  • The Skyhawks took all five meetings during the 2021 season with the last meetings coming on May 2, 2021 in a doubleheader. Stonehill won both contests on walk-off hits by 10-9 and 12-11 scores. All five games last spring came from North Easton, Mass.
  •  Stonehill has won each of the last eight games entering Friday and has won 13 of the last 14 contests. The last Saint Anselm win came on Apr. 30, 2018 by a 5-3 score.
