PREVIEW: Baseball heads to Bentley for four-game NE10 series

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team opens a four-game series on Friday, Apr. 1 at Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play.

Following Friday's nine-inning contest, the teams will play two seven-inning games in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 2 and will conclude the series with a nine-inning game on Sunday, Apr. 3.

The Hawks dropped a non-conference contest to cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University on Mar. 30 by a 10-5 score. With the loss, Saint Anselm falls to 8-14 on the season. After the four-game series against Bentley, the Hawks will play their first games of the season at Sullivan Park in a four-game set with Southern New Hampshire, in conference play.

The Falcons dropped all four of their NE10 opening contests to Franklin Pierce University on Mar. 25, Mar. 26, and Mar. 27. The team is now 5-14 overall and 0-4 in conference play. After hosting the Hawks, Bentley plays a pair of doubleheaders against Saint Michael's College on Saturday, Apr. 9 and Sunday Apr. 10, both in NE10 play.

Fans attending the contests at the Robert DeFelice Baseball Field are expected to familiarize themselves with the Bentley University spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Sophomore Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) tied a game-high three hits for the Hawks and drove in two runs in the cross-town contest. Junior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) launched his second home run of the season in the ninth inning, tying a game-high with three runs batted in.
  • Graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) recorded two hits each for the Hawks against Southern New Hampshire.
  • Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) leads the Saint Anselm offense with a .369 batting average which is 12th best in the NE10. Borrelli leads the Hawks with a 1.046 OPS and ranks second in slugging percentage at .600.
  • Maurice ranks second on the team in batting average (.348) and OPS (1.032) while leading in slugging percentage at .609. Maurice also leads the team in runs scored with 19 and in home runs with five. Maurice, Borrelli, and senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) are tied for the top spot on the team with 24 hits.
  • Freshman Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) made his first collegiate start against the Penmen. Reminder allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.), senior Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, Mass.), and freshman Zachary Abbott (Gloucester, Mass.) threw one inning each for the Hawks in relief.
  • Juniors Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) and John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) lead the Hawks starters with six starts each. Bedder, freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.), and sophomore Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) have all thrown over 20 innings for Saint Anselm.
  • Hunter and junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) have made seven and six appearances each, respectively. Out of the bullpen, Hunter and Mosseau have recorded 16.1 and 14.0 innings pitched. Freshman Harry Peters (Hull, Mass.) and junior Travis MacMurdo (Tewksbury, Mass.) lead pitching staff with 0.00 earned run averages in two appearances each.
  • Defensively, the Hawks have a .967 fielding percentage, committing 24 errors in 717 chances. Borrelli and Pezzolla have over 100 chances each while Maurice has a 1.000 fielding percentage on 67 chances.
SCOUTING BENTLEY
  • Jackson Walonis leads the Falcons offense with a .324 batting average. Walonis has recorded 22 hits with four doubles, one triple, and two home runs. He has scored 12 times and plated 16 runs this season.
  • Kyle Halloran is the team leader in hits with 23, at-bats at 81, and runs with 21. Halloran is batting .284 with one home run and eight runs batted in. He is also lead the team with 10 stolen bases.
  • Charlie Auditore, Tim Zupkus, and Liam Sears have all notched at least 20 hits this season. All three student-athletes are batting over .260 and have scored double digit runs this season.
  • Sears and Eddy Beauregard are tied for the Falcons lead with three home runs each this season.
  • Jimmy Hodgson has drawn six starts for the Falcons and is 1-4 this season. He leads the team with 34 innings pitched. Jared Brooks is 3-1 in five starts, throwing 32 innings and has a 3.66 earned run average, which leads the starters. Brooks is averaging 10.41 strikeouts per nine innings. Brooks and Hodgson rank second and third on the squad in earned run average.
  • Sean Mahan has made seven appearances on the mound for Bentley. Mahan is 0-1 with one save and a 6.35 earned run average. Brandon Ostiguy has a 0.00 earned run average is two appearances, marking the best ERA on the team.
  • The Falcons defense is operating at a .949 fielding percentage. The team has committed 35 errors in 691 chances. Auditore leads the squad in chances at 117 while Beauregard has a 1.000 fielding percentage in 98 chances.
ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY
  • Following the completion of the four-game series, the Hawks and Falcons will have met 144 times, which is the most against one opponent in Saint Anselm baseball program history.
  • Bentley is 91-48-1 against Saint Anselm all-time.
  • The programs met five times in 2021 with the most recent contest coming on May 11, 2021. Bentley posted a comeback win over Saint Anselm by a 15-13 score in the First Round of the NE10 Postseason. Bentley was 4-1 against Saint Anselm last spring.
  • The Hawks posted a 3-2 win on Apr. 3, 2021 which snapped a nine-game win streak for the Faclons. Bentley has won 12 of the last 13 meetings in the all-time series.
