PREVIEW: Baseball battles Southern N.H. in non-conference contest

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team makes the trip to cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Mar. 30.

The Hawks opened their Northeast-10 Conference slate against Assumption University on Mar. 26 and Mar. 27 and captured a win in the fourth game of the series, going 1-3 on the weekend from Gill Stadium. Saint Anselm is now 8-13 on the season and 1-3 in conference games. After the non-conference tilt with the Penmen, the Hawks head to Bentley University on Friday, Apr. 1, Saturday, Apr. 2, and Sunday, Apr. 3 for a four-game conference series with the Falcons.

The Penmen swept Stonehill College in their NE10 opening series, improving to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in conference contests. Southern New Hampshire is currently ranked as the No. 12 team in Division II and the top team in the East Region according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. After hosting the Hawks, the Penmen head to the University of New Haven in three non-conference contests on Saturday, Apr. 2 and Sunday, Apr. 3.

Currently, the Penmen hold a 15-9 advantage in the 2021-22 Queen City Cup standings with the baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse programs still to meet this spring. The full standings breakdown can be found here.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) posted a .571 batting average in the four-game set with the Greyhounds, posting eight hits in 14 at-bats including a five-for-five game on Sunday. That ties a program record for hits in a single game.
  • On the season, Borrelli is batting .387 with a team-high 1.086 OPS and is second in slugging percentage at .629. The junior has recorded 24 hits in 62 at-bats, scoring 12 runs and driving in 11. Borrelli has registered six doubles, three triples, and a home run.
  • Senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) has a .359 batting average and a 1.079 OPS, both rank second on the team while leading the squad in slugging percentage at .641. Maurice is the team-leader in home runs (5) and runs batted in (22). When compared to the NE10, Maurice ranks fourth in homers and is tied for the conference lead in RBI.
  • Senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) has recorded multi-hit games in three of the last five games including a three-for-four day in game two on Sunday. The senior drove in four runs in the win and ranks second on the team with 14 runs batted in.
  • Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.), graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.), and sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) have played in all 21 games for the Hawks this season and are batting over .245.
  • Juniors Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) and John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) lead the Saint Anselm starters with six starts each. Bedder leads the group with a 4.67 earned-run average in a team-high 27.0 innings pitched. Sophomore Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) has thrown the third most innings for the Hawks (20.2) and has a 4.79 earned-run average.
  • Freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.), junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.), and sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) have all made six appearances on the mound this season. Betty has drawn five starts and owns a 12.21 earned-run average while Mosseau and Hunter have earned-run averages of 3.21 and 3.52.
  • Freshman Harry Peters (Hull, Mass.) and junior Travis MacMurdo (Tewksbury, Mass.) have 0.00 earned-run averages in two appearances each.
  • Borrelli leads the Saint Anselm defensive corps with 131 chances. Maurice owns a 1.000 fielding percentage on 61 chances. The Hawks, as a team, have a .968 fielding percentage with 22 errors on 683 chances.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Nick Schwartz leads the Penmen offense with a .391 batting average, collecting 18 hits in 46 at-bats. Schwartz ranks second on the team in OPS at 1.126 and in slugging percentage at .609 while leading in doubles with seven.
  • Sam Henrie ranks second on the Penmen with a .386 average. However, he leads the squad with 27 hits, six home runs, and 21 runs batted in. His six home runs are tied for the most in the NE10.
  • Idelson Taveras, Cam Caraher, and Daniel Rivera are all batting above .310 on the season. Rivera leads the team in at-bats with 71 while ranking second with 22 hits. All three student-athletes have double digit runs batted in through 18 games.
  • Brandon White leads the Southern New Hampshire pitching staff with five starts this season. He is 3-1 with a 2.20 earned-run average in 28.2 innings pitched. Josh Roberge and Angus McCloskey have drawn four starts each and rank second and third in innings pitched with 26.0 and 21.2.
  • Trevor Anibal leads all Penmen student-athletes with seven appearances on the mound. He has two saves and a 2-0 record in 17.2 innings pitched. Anibal also leads the team with a 0.51 earned-run average.
  • All four pitchers listed above have reached the 30 strikeout threshold this season with White posting 31 and Roberge, McCloskey, and Anibal at 30 punch outs each.
  • The Penmen have committed 23 errors this season in 634 chances, good for a team fielding percentage of .964. Dakota Mulcay has had 123 chances and has made one error, good for a .992 fielding percentage. Michael laRocca has made an out in all 41 chances his way this season.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • This will be the 134th meeting in the all-time series between the Hawks and Penmen. Southern New Hampshire is 83-50 against Saint Anselm all-time.
  • The last time the programs met came on Apr. 10, 2021 at Penmen Field. Southern New Hampshire took both games of the doubleheader by 7-4 and 24-1 scores.
  • This non-conference contest marks the eighth consecutive game in the series played at Penmen Field.
  • The Penmen are currently riding a 24-game win streak over the Hawks, starting on Apr. 11, 2013. The Hawks posted a win on Apr. 4, 2013, grabbing a 6-3 victory at Southern New Hampshire.
