PREVIEW: Baseball opens NE10 play with four-game series against Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team opens Northeast-10 Conference play against Assumption University on Saturday, Mar. 26 and Sunday, Mar. 27 from Gill Stadium in Manchester, N.H.

The Hawks dropped four games in their series against nationally-ranked Slippery Rock University last weekend. With the loss in game one, the Saint Anselm win streak of six games came to a close as the team now sits at 7-10 heading to the NE10 Conference opener against the Greyhounds. After welcoming Assumption to the Granite State, the Hawks play their final non-conference game of the season at cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, Mar. 30.

The Greyhounds swept a doubleheader from Queens College on Mar. 20, improving to 6-7 on the season. After opening NE10 play against the Hawks, Assumption played at American International College on Wednesday, Mar. 30 before making their home opener on Friday, Apr. 1 against Franklin Pierce University.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) lead the Hawks offense with batting averages of .333 and .327. Maurice is registering a team-high 1.033 OPS and a .612 slugging percentage.
  • Maurice is the team-leader with 20 runs batted in and in home runs with four. The senior has registered 16 hits in 49 at-bats through 14 games played this season. Borrelli has registered four doubles, two triples, and one home run while tying Maurice with 16 hits.
  • Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) sits just .005 below a .300 batting average this season. Collins leads the team with 18 hits and is one of five student-athletes to play in each game so far.
  • Junior Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) is tied for the Hawks lead with five games started on the mound. He owns a 2-3 record in those starts and has a 4.38 earned-run average. The junior leads the team in innings pitched with 24.2 and in strikeouts with 43. Bedder is limiting opposing batters to a .189 batting average.
  • Freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) and junior John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) have made four and five starts each. Betty has a 1-2 record in 19.1 innings pitched with a 14.43 earned-run average. Betty has fanned 19 batters this season. Donovan holds a 0-4 record with a 14.63 earned-run average in 16.0 innings pitched. Donovan has struck out 16 batters this season.
  • Junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) and sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) have both made five appearances out of the bullpen for the Hawks. Mosseau has a 3.75 earned-run average and a 1-0 record while striking out 20 in 12.0 innings of work. Hunter is also 1-0 with a 3.97 earned-run average in 11.1 innings pitched. Freshman Harry Peters (Hull, Mass.) and junior Travis MacMurdo (Tewksbury, Mass.) lead the team with 0.00 earned-run averages. Both student-athletes have made two appearances on the mound this season.
  • The Hawks own a .966 fielding percentage, committing 18 errors in 527 chances. Borrelli leads the team with 115 chances while senior Enzo Merlonghi (Monroe, Conn.) leads the team with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 35 chances.
SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
  • Jared Berardino has played in 11 games this season and is leading the Assumption offense with a .311 batting average. Berardino is tied for the team-lead with 14 hits with two doubles and one home run. Berardino also leads the squad with eight runs batted in.
  • Jack Barry follows Berardino closely with a .302 batting average, recording 13 hits in 43 at-bats. Barry has scored seven runs while driving in four.
  • Eric Preston, Owen Podolec, and Nick Gaglioti are tied for the team lead with two home runs each while Jake Hamel has registered a team high four doubles.
  • Patrick Harrington has started four games on the mound for Assumption. He is 2-1 in 23.2 innings pitched with a 3.04 earned-run average. Harrington has fanned 28 batters while allowing 18 hits and nine runs, eight earned. Shea Ryan and Jack Choate have drawn three starts each and are both 1-1. James McNamara leads the starters with a 2.81 earned run average in two starts, registering the second most innings pitched with 16.0.
  • The Greyhounds defense has committed 24 errors in 490 chances, good for a .951 fielding percentage. Eric Preston leads the Greyhounds defense with 55 total chances. Preston leads the team with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Six other student-athletes have had 47 or more chances defensively.
ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION
  • Upon completion of the weekend series, the Hawks and Greyhounds will have met 138 times in the all-time series. Assumption is 78-54-1 all-time against Saint Anselm.
  • The programs met three times in 2021 with the Greyhounds taking all three contests. In the most recent contest, which came on Apr. 28, 2021, Assumption posted a 16-3 win from Sullivan Park. That win extended the Greyhounds win streak to 12 games over the Hawks.
  • The 12-game streak is the longest for either side in the all-time series. Saint Anselm won seven games in a row from Mar. 6, 2004 to Apr. 25, 2005, marking its longest win streak over the Greyhounds.
  • Since the programs played four neutral site games in the 2015 season, Assumption has gone 16-1 against Saint Anselm.
