PREVIEW: Baseball concludes spring break trip with four-game set at Slippery Rock

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team heads to Slippery Rock University for a four-game series to conclude its spring break trip.

The Hawks and the Rock are scheduled to play single games on Friday, Mar. 18 and Sunday, Mar. 20 with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 19. Friday and Saturday's contests are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts while Sunday is set for 12 p.m.

The Hawks took all four games of their weekend series against Dominican (N.Y.) College this past weekend. Saint Anselm is riding a five-game win streak and are winners in seven of its last eight games, improving to 7-6 on the season. The Hawks are scheduled to open Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday, Mar. 25, Saturday, Mar. 26, and Sunday, Mar. 27 with a four-game series against Assumption University from Sullivan Park.

The Rock opened the season with a four-game sweep of Davis & Elkins College on Mar. 5 and Mar. 6 before taking a doubleheader from West Virginia State University on Mar. 11. The team was scheduled to conclude its three-game series with West Virginia State on Mar. 13 but that contest was canceled. After hosting the Hawks, the Rock open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play with a home-and-home doubleheader against Indiana University (Pa.) on Friday, Mar. 25 and Saturday, Mar. 26.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • After falling to Adelphi University in a doubleheader on Feb. 27, the Hawks have won seven of their last eight games and are outscoring opponents by a 75-46 margin. The team is averaging 9.37 runs per game in its last eight games.
  • Saint Anselm, who is receiving votes in the most recent National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll, is led by senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.), junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.), and sophomores Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.).
  • Maurice currently is batting .343 with a 1.182 OPS and a .743 slugging percentage. He leads the team with four home runs and 17 runs batted in, recording 12 hits in 35 at-bats. Borrelli is batting .353 on 12 hits in 34 at-bats. Borrelli has registered four doubles, two triples, and has one long ball this season.
  • Clough and Elmore have started all 13 games this season. Clough is batting .286 with three doubles and eight runs batted in while Elmore follows closely with a .275 batting average. Elmore has doubled twice and launched three home runs, trailing only Maurice on the squad.
  • Leading the starters on the mound is junior Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.). Bedded has started four games this season, posting a 2-2 record and holding a 3.66 earned run average. Bedder has pitched a team-high 19.2 innings this season, while striking out 37 and allowing 13 hits. Junior John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) have started four games and three games each for Saint Anselm.
  • Out of the bullpen, junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) has made four appearances and holds a 0.82 earned run average. The junior has fanned 19 batters and allowed nine hits in 11 innings pitched. Sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) has also made four appearances in relief this season. Hunter is 1-0 with a 3.86 earned run average in 9.1 innings pitched.
  • Defensively, the Hawks have a .969 fielding percentage. The team has committed 13 errors in 414 chances with Borrelli leading the team with 86 chances. Junior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) leads the team with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 37 chances.
SCOUTING SLIPPERY ROCK
  • Anthony Cinicola, Connor Hamilton, and Abraham Mow lead the Rock offense each of the three student-athletes are batting over .435. Cinicola leads the team with a .462 batting average, registering six hits in 13 at-bats through five games played.
  • Mow leads the team in runs batted in with 11 while Hamilton follows closely with 10. The duo is responsible for four of the eight home runs hit by Slippery Rock this season. Hamilton has recorded three long balls to lead the squad while Joel Spishock has recorded two in four games played his season, ranking second on the team in homers.
  • Hamilton and Mow have combined to cross the plate 17 times with Hamilton scoring nine times and Mow just behind with eight.
  • Slippery Rock has scored 54 runs through six games, averaging nine runs per contest. The team has allowed just five runs to this point in the season.
  • Devin Dunn and Luke Trueman have started two games each for the Rock. Dunn has thrown two complete game shutouts, recording a 0.00 earned run average in 14 innings of work. He has allowed six hits while striking out a team-high 19. Trueman has pitched 12.2 innings in two starts for Slippery Rock. He has a 2.13 earned run average and has fanned 15 batters.
  • The Rock has used eight pitchers through its opening six games with five student-athletes sitting at 0.00 earned run averages. The team has a combined 1.02 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .172 batting average.
  • Slippery Rock has committed one error in the field and as a team have a .994 fielding percentage. Hamilton leads the team with 59 defensive chances and has a 1.000 fielding percentage.

  • The four-game series marks the first four meetings between the programs all-time.
  • When playing against teams for the first time this season, Saint Anselm is 0-1. The squad fell to West Chester University on Feb. 27 from the Dinwiddie Sports Complex in Sutherland, Va.
  • Against teams currently in the PSAC, Saint Anselm is 9-25 all-time and 0-3 this season. The last win for the Hawks against a PSAC program came on Mar. 16, 2019 in a 10-1 win over East Stroudsburg University.
