PREVIEW: Baseball heads to Adelphi in Sunday doubleheader

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team heads to Adelphi University in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 27.

The Hawks dropped their three games in the season's opening weekend from Sutherland, Va. Saint Anselm fell to East Stroudsburg University by 5-0 and 18-4 scores on Feb. 19 before suffering a 16-0 defeat to West Chest University on Feb. 20. After heading to Adelphi, the Hawks will travel to High Point, N.C. to meet Post University in neutral site contests on Friday, Mar. 4, Saturday, Mar. 5, and Sunday, Mar. 6 from Truist Point. Friday's opening pitch is schedule for 2 p.m. while Saturday is a doubleheader with scheduled starts of 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. To conclude the four games, Sunday is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch.

The Panthers are opening their 2022 season on Sunday against the Hawks. The teams were scheduled for two doubleheaders this weekend but Saturday's contests were canceled due to inclement weather. After hosting Saint Anselm, Adelphi plays a three-game set with Molloy College on Friday, Mar. 4, Saturday, Mar. 5, and Sunday, Mar. 6 with Friday and Sunday being played from Garden City, N.Y. while Saturday will be from Uniondale, N.Y.

Fans attending the games at the William J. Bonomo Memorial Field are expected to familiarize themselves with the Adelphi University spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) leads the Hawks offense with a .300 batting average. He has recorded three hits in 10 at-bats, driving in one run and recording a double.
  • Senior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) and sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) are second and third on the team in batting average at .222 and .200.
  • Senior Daniel Baker (Reading, Mass.) recorded the first home run of the season for the Hawks, who launched 40 in 29 games last spring.
  • Junior Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) was the opening game starter for the Hawks. In a seven-inning contest, Bedder went four innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out five. Freshman Harry Peters (Hull, Mass.), junior Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.), and junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) lead the Hawks with 0.00 earned-run averages. As a team, Saint Anselm owns an 11.63 earned-run average and a 2.92 WHIP.
  • Defensively, the Hawks committed four errors in the games against the Warriors and Golden Rams, good for a .959 fielding percentage.
  • In the three games over the weekend, eight Hawks made their collegiate debuts including freshmen Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.), Danny Kent (Hanson, Mass.), Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.), Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.), Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.), Zachary Abbott (Gloucester, Mass.), Roman Ercoli (Concord, Mass.), and Peters.
SCOUTING ADELPHI
  • The Panthers were selected to finish in the top spot of the Northeast-10 Conference's Southwest Division in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. The team received nine-first place votes on their way to 85 points, trailing only Southern New Hampshire University when compared to both divisions of the 14-team conference.
  • In 2021, Adelphi posted a 19-15 overall record a 14-7 mark in the NE10 play. The team downed American International College in the Southwest Division semifinal before taking a three-game series against Le Moyne College to capture the Southwest Division crown. The team was swept by Southern New Hampshire in the championship series however.
  • Matt Alifano led the Panthers with a .394 batting average in 34 games played last spring. He posted 50 hits in 127 at-bats, driving in a team-high 33 runs. He also doubled 11 times and registered seven round trippers on his way to a .677 slugging percentage. Matt Feliz and Jack Ryan ranked second and third in batting average for the Panthers at .359 and .345, return to the team in 2022.
  • Nicolas Luc started 10 games for the Panthers in 2021. He posted a team-low 3.52 earned run average and a 5-3 record. Luc was on the mound for 53.2 innings, striking out 65 batters while allowing 50 hits. Josh Rovner and Michael Storms who had the second (4.58) and third lowest (4.64) earned run averages are back in the 2022 rotation for the Panthers.
  • Head coach Bill Ianniciello enters his second season at the helm of the Panthers baseball program. Ianniciello was the interim head coach in 2021 and has spent nine years through various coaching roles with Adelphi.
ALL-TIME vs. ADELPHI
  • The doubleheader marks the 14th and 15th meetings between the Hawks and Panthers. Adelphi holds a 7-6 mark against Saint Anselm is the all-time series.
  • The two programs have not met since the regular season doubleheader on Apr. 6, 2019. The Panthers took both games of the series from Sullivan Park by 13-1 and 9-0 scores.
  • Saint Anselm won the first meeting by a 3-0 score on Mar. 23, 2009 before Adelphi captured four consecutive wins from Apr. 17, 2010 to May 1, 2011. The Hawks responded with four wins of their own from Mar. 23, 2013 to Apr. 12, 2015 but have gone 1-3 since the four-game win streak.
