PREVIEW: Baseball opens 2022 season against East Stroudsburg, West Chester

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team opens its 2022 season with a doubleheader against East Stroudsburg University on Saturday, Feb. 19 and a single game on Sunday, Feb. 20 against West Chester University.

All three contests will be played the Dinwiddie Sports Complex in Sutherland, Va. with Saturday's opening pitch slated for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. while Sunday is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Hawks posted a 10-19 overall record and a 5-14 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference last season. Saint Anselm qualified for the NE10 postseason but fell to Bentley University by a 15-13 score in the First Round.

The Warriors opened their season with a three-game set against Barton College on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13. The teams split Saturday's doubleheader as East Stroudsburg fell by a 5-3 score in game one before netted a 6-3 win in game two. Barton captured a 4-1 win on Sunday, pushing the Warriors to 1-2 through the opening weekend.

The Golden Rams open their 2022 campaign with a doubleheader against The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, Feb. 19 before concluding their three-game weekend against the Hawks on Sunday.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Saint Anselm was selected to finished sixth in the NE10 Northeast Division Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Hawks netted 34 points in the poll, which put them in 11th out of all 14 programs in the conference.
  • The Hawks are returning 30 student-athletes from the 2021 campaign including the top-seven hitters from last season in senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.), sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.), senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.), senior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.), senior Daniel Baker (Reading, Mass.), and senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.). All seven student-athletes competed in 22 or more of the Hawks games last spring.
  • Pierro collected NE10 Third Team All-Conference honors after batting .410 in 23 games played. The senior collected 32 hits including seven doubles and five home runs, adding 12 runs batted in. Maurice and Doran combined to hit 19 homers in the spring, as the Hawks belted 40 on the season, which is second-most in a single season in program history.
  • Saint Anselm is also returning the NE10's Northeast Division Rookie Pitcher of the Year in junior Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.). Bedder started seven games on the mound for the Hawks, finished with a 2-5 record and a 5.29 earned-run average. The junior hurled 32.1 innings, allowing 31 hits while striking out 54 batters.
  • Head coach Jerod Edmondson '06 enters his third season at the helm of the baseball program.  Under his guidance, the team posted .467 slugging and .387 on-base percentages to conclude the 2021 season rank second all-time in single-season team records.
SCOUTING EAST STROUDSBURG
  • The Warriors are coming off a 15-15-1 campaign with a 13-12-1 mark in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.
  • East Stroudsburg was projected to finish fourth in PSAC East this season. The Warriors collected one first place vote in the poll.
  • Head coach John Kochmansky enters his 15th season at the helm of the Warriors baseball program. He is 369-259-5 as the head coach of East Stroudsburg.
  • Anthony Torreullas is batting .636 with a 1.576 OPS through three games this season. He has clubbed one home run with seven hits, driving in four runs. Torreullas was named the NCBWA DII Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week and the PSAC East Athlete of the Week following the series with Barton.
  • Brent Francisco, Tom Reisinger, and Chase Nowak started on the bump in the three games last weekend for the Warriors. Both Francisco and Reisinger threw for six innings in their outings while Nowak went four in his start. Francisco and Reisinger are tied with a 1.50 earned-run average.
SCOUTING WEST CHESTER
  • The Golden Rams were 20-11 overall and 20-10 in PSAC play during the 2021 season. The team fell to Bloomsburg University in the PSAC Quarterfinals by a 5-2 score on May 12, 2021.
  • West Chester was selected to finished second in the PSAC East, in the conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll, trailing Millersville who received eight first place votes in the poll.
  • Mike Ferrara and Justin Horn return as the top-two hitters for the Golden Rams. Ferrara posted a .403 batting average and a 1.419 OPS in 24 games last spring. He slugged a team-high nine homers and drove in 36 runs while Horn registered a .394 average and a 1.178 OPS. He drove in 35 runs while leading the team with 11 doubles.
  • Braeden Fausnaught returns as the team's top starter from 2021. He started in eight games and finished with 47.1 innings pitched. Fausnaught posted a 3.42 earned run average while fanning 54 hitters.
  • Head coach Mike LaRosa is in his second season as the head coach of the Golden Rams. In his coaching career, LaRosa holds a 215-166-2 record all-time.
ALL-TIME vs. EAST STROUDSBURG
  • The doubleheader marks the sixth and seventh meetings between the Hawks and Warriors. Saint Anselm is 3-2 against East Stroudsburg all-time.
  • The last time the teams battled was on Mar. 16, 2019, resulting in a 10-1 win for the Hawks. That was part of three meetings during the 2019 season with the Warriors taking the season series, two games to one.
  • The first meeting in the series came on Feb. 17, 2018 with the Hawks winning both games of a doubleheader by 3-2 and 4-0 scores.
ALL-TIME vs. WEST CHESTER
  • This will be the first meeting in the all-time series.
