The Hawks were originally slated to play a four-game series against Southern Connecticut State University this weekend, but the contests were postponed per the established institutional and conference health protocols.
Live Statistics will be provided for the single nine-inning game. No outside spectators (i.e. student-athlete family members and friends, fans who are not Stonehill students) will be allowed to attend outdoor collegiate sporting events held at Stonehill until further notice.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-1 record last weekend, winning the first three games of a four-game series with American International. The team's 23-0 victory against the Yellow Jackets to open Sunday's doubleheader set the team record for runs scored.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
- While the team's statistics through just four games are a small sample size, the Hawks are currently batting .371 on the season with 46 hits in 124 at-bats. Only three Saint Anselm teams have hit over .300 on the season – in 1995, the Hawks batted .314 (327-for-1,043) and, most recently, hit .313 in 2001 (459-for-1,467).
- With 12 home runs through the first four games, Saint Anselm has already matched its long-ball output from the most recent complete season of games in 2019. Only in 10 seasons prior has Saint Anselm slugged 20 or more home runs. In fact, the Hawks combined for only eight home runs in the 2016 and 2018 seasons, combined.
- To open the season, Saint Anselm picked up a 4-2 victory in the seven-inning opener on Saturday before walking off the Yellow Jackets in dramatic fashion in eight innings. Down 7-4 with one out left in the seventh inning of game two, the Hawks tied things up and used a walk-off home run by junior Dan Baker (Reading, Mass.) in the bottom of the eighth to win by an 8-7 margin.
- With the two victories on Saturday, the Hawks were able to sweep a doubleheader against a single Northeast-10 Conference opponent for the first time since Apr. 25, 2015.
- Junior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) batted .462 with six hits, two doubles, two home runs and 11 runs batted in across the first four games of his Saint Anselm tenure. Maurice helped the Hawks offense total 12 home runs in just four games and his team-record 10 RBI against American International in Sunday's opening game fueled a team-record 23-0 victory.
- In honor of his outstanding performance, Maurice was named Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week on Monday. He went on to capture National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Player of the Week on Thursday.
- Freshman Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.), a freshman outfielder, earned NE10 Rookie of the Week honors after posting six hits, including a double on Saturday against the Yellow Jackets while logging three consecutive two-hit games. He drove in three runs on Sunday in game one against the Yellow Jackets and finished the weekend with eight runs scored, three walks and two stolen bases.
- Sophomore pitcher Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) and classmate Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) were named to the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll for their contributing performances over the weekend. Bedder struck out a career-high eight batters on Sunday and limited the Yellow Jackets to just three hits.
- Borrelli collected two hits in three of his four games on the weekend, going 7-for-16 in total with four home runs and two doubles. He drove in seven runs, including four in the historic 23-0 victory, and smacked two home runs in that contest. He has posted at least one home run in three of his four games and has at least one extra-base hit in each contest so far.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
- Stonehill has been picked to finish fifth in the Northeast Division, according to the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll revealed earlier this March. The Skyhawks posted an 8-5 overall record in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and finished the campaign ranked 10th in the East Region poll.
- The Skyhawks are led by Pat Boen, who enters his 24th season with the Stonehill baseball program. The three-time NE10 Coach of the Year has won 579 games in his career, helping the Skyhawks make three NCAA Division II postseason appearances.
- The Skyhawks ended their 2020 season by winning four of five games. Among returning student-athletes, Stonehill was led by freshmen Conor Kiely and Mike Swanholm – the duo combined to post 32 hits in 66 at-bats, hitting .348. Swanholm, a first baseman, smacked two home runs in his first 11 career games.
- John Orzechowski leads the senior returners with 97 career games played. He has picked up 83 hits in 97 career at-bats (.254 career batting average) while classmates Rob Duarte and Michael White also boast significant playing experience.
ALL-TIME vs. STONEHILL
- Stonehill owns an 83-22 advantage in the all-time series against Saint Anselm that dates back to Apr. 29, 1981, a 5-2 win for the Hawks.
- The Skyhawks have won eight of the last nine games over Saint Anselm, with the one victory coming on Apr. 30, 2018, a 5-3 decision for the Hawks at Sullivan Park. In that contest, current senior Will Conaton (Windham, N.H.) pitched seven strong innings, fanning what was then a career-high eight batters.
- The Skyhawks have won 47-of-57 games played as the home team. In the three-game series played in 2019, Stonehill outscored the Hawks by a 16-to-4 margin.
