PREVIEW: Women's soccer closes regular season in battle with Bentley

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team concludes its regular season at Bentley on Wednesday with the opening kick scheduled for 3 p.m.

After downing now No. 16 Southern New Hampshire on Thursday, Oct. 28, the fourth-ranked team in the East Region according to United Soccer Coaches in Saint Anselm, fell to Stonehill on Saturday, Oct. 30 by a 3-2 score. Saint Anselm is now 9-4-1 on the season with a 7-4-1 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Hawks have secured a spot in the NE10 playoffs and will be playing on Sunday, Nov. 7. However, the opponent, location and time is to be determined.

Bentley, who is the sixth-ranked team in the East Region, posted a 1-0 result at Saint Michael's on Friday, Oct. 29, improving to 7-5-3 overall and 7-4-1 in league matches. The Falcons also have qualified for the NE10 playoffs and will await the conclusion of Wednesday's matches for their opponent with a location and time to be determined.

Both squads are currently in a three-way tie with Franklin Pierce in the third position in the conference standings as they try to secure a top-four finish in the conference standings in order to host a NE10 Quarterfinals match on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Fans attending the match at the Bentley University Soccer Field are expected to familiarize themselves with Bentley's spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks started the season at 5-1-1 before falling to Assumption on Oct. 2. In that match, one of the longest shutout streaks in program history came to an end at nearly 449 minutes of play. Saint Anselm dropped its next match to Franklin Pierce before winning their next four matches, capped off by the win over Southern New Hampshire. In their last match out, the Hawks fell to Stonehill from Grappone Stadium on Oct. 30.
  • After recording her first collegiate goal and assists, sophomore Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.) was named the NE10 Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday. McCleary recorded the game-winner in the 24th minute over the Penmen and added an assist on the Hawks second goal against the Skyhawks.
  • Senior Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.) assisted McCleary's goal before scoring her third of the season against Stonehill. She is second on the team in points with three goals and six assists. Her six helpers are tied for the conference lead.
  • Sophomore Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) is tied for fourth in the NE10 in goals scored with seven. Gotobed is the team leader in points with 16, adding two assists to her seven goals. She assisted on Pratt's goal against Stonehill.
  • Junior Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) has posted five shutouts while aiding in six this season. Macaluso has started all 14 games for the Hawks and has a goals-against average of 1.04 and a 0.773-save percentage. The junior has accumulated 51 saves, averaging 3.64 saves per game.
SCOUTING BENTLEY
  • The Falcons closed the opening month of play with a 3-2-3 record overall before grabbing two wins on each end of a three-match losing skid. They are now 7-5-3 overall with a 7-4-1 mark in league matches.
  • Dana Goulet, Brooke Jones, and Sydney O'Connor have recorded five goals each to the lead the Falcons offense. As a team, the Falcons have netted 18 goals on the season.
  • The Falcons have three student-athletes with three assists each. Amanda Andriano, Rebecca Nguyen, and Jones are leading the team in that category as Jones is the team-leader in points with 13.
  • Kat Hassapis is 5-4-2 in 12 starts for Bentley. She has a 0.58 goals against average and a 0.891-save percentage, recording five shutouts and aiding the team to six. Hassapis ranks third in the NE10 in goals-against average and first in save percentage.
  • In its last two matches, Bentley has scored four goals in two wins without allowing a goal. Goulet and O'Connor netted one goal each while Jones found the back of the net twice including the lone goal in the most recent match against Saint Michael's.
ALL-TIME vs. BENTLEY
  • This will be the 31st meeting all-time between the Hawks and Falcons. Saint Anselm is 18-9-3 against Bentley.
  • The last meeting was the season finale on Nov. 5, 2019, which resulted in a scoreless tie from Grappone Stadium.
  • In the last 15 meetings, the Hawks are 10-2-4 and have a plus-18 goal differential, dating back to the beginning of the trend on Sept. 21, 2005.
