PREVIEW: Women's soccer set to battle SCSU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's soccer team heads to Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 23.

The Hawks found the back of the net five times on Saturday against Pace, which is a season-high mark for goals. Saint Anselm improved to 7-3-1 with the win and 5-3-1 in NE10 play. After making the trip to New Haven, Conn., the Hawks host Southern New Hampshire and Stonehill before heading to Bentley in their regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Two-second half goals propelled the Owls to a 2-0 win over New Haven on Wednesday. With the win, Southern Connecticut State improves to 5-5-2 overall with a 4-3-2 mark in conference matches. The Owls hit the road for two matches at American International and at Saint Rose before wrapping up the regular season by hosting Stonehill on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

Fans attending the match at Jess Dow Field are expected to familiarize themselves with the Southern Connecticut State spectator policy.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks opened the season with a 5-1-1 record before dropping back-to-back matches to Assumption and Franklin Pierce. Since then, Saint Anselm has posted a 3-2 overtime win over American International and a 5-1 win over Pace on Senior Day.
  • Sophomore Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) found the back of the net twice against Pace, pushing her season total to six goals. She is tied for fourth in the conference in goals scored.
  • Senior Regan Pratt (Newburyport, Mass.), sophomore Alexandra Baltas (Worcester, Mass.), and freshman Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) all registered one goal in the match. For Baltas and Pecor, it is their first career goals. The Hawks have 21 goals scored this season, coming from 11 student-athletes.
  • Pratt and freshman Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) are tied for the team-lead with four assists each. Wnek was awarded an assist on the third and fourth Hawks goals against Pace. The duo is tied for third in the NE10 in total assists.
  • Junior Kate Macaluso (Malverne, N.Y.) is 7-3-1 on the season after drawing the start in all 11 matches this season. She has totaled 28 saves, translating to a .700 save percentage and a 1.06 goals against average.
  • Saint Anselm currently sits in third in the NE10 standings with a .611 win percentage. The Hawks have scored 17 goals in conference play which is the fifth-highest when compared to conference opponents. Saint Anselm is unbeaten on the road this season with a 3-0-1 record.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • The Owls were 1-5-1 near the midway point of the season. Since suffering a 1-0 loss at Southern New Hampshire on Sept. 25, they are unbeaten in their last five matches and have allowed just one goal during that stretch.
  • Kelsey Burr has scored in four of the five matches during the unbeaten streak, including the game-winner against New Haven on a penalty kick. She leads the team in scoring with four goals. Julia Alicea, Kaitlyn D'Amico, and Victoria Vera have all scored two goals this season.
  • Seven Owls have recorded one assist this season including Burr who leads the team with nine points on the season.
  • Allie Smith has started all 12 matches for Southern Connecticut State and has played every minute of each match to date. She is 5-5-2 with a 0.72 goals against average and a 0.855 save percentage. Smith ranks sixth in the NE10 in goals against average and save percentage and fifth in total saves with 53.
  • Southern Connecticut State ranks fifth in the conference standings with a .556 win percentage. The Owls have a plus-two goal differential in NE10 play, scoring nine goals and allowing seven. During the unbeaten streak, the Owls are outscoring opponents by an 8-1 margin. Southern Connecticut State is 4-0-2 when playing at home this season.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • This will be the 22nd meeting between the two programs as the Owls are 12-6-3 against the Hawks all-time.
  • The last meeting came on Oct. 26, 2019 and resulted in a 1-1 tie at Melucci Field. The last Hawks victory came on Sept. 19, 2017 which was a 1-0 victory in overtime on the Hilltop.
  • When playing on the Southern Connecticut State campus, the Owls are 9-1-1 against Saint Anselm all-time. When playing on the Saint Anselm campus, the Hawks are 5-4-2.
