Between 2017 and 2019, Nylen was the Head Coach at Florida International University. Including a 2017 campaign where Nylen's charges posted an 11-0-4 regular season record, he posted a 29-15-9 record (.632) as Head Coach and three of his student-athletes were drafted in the top-two rounds of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
Earning NSCAA First Team All-America honors as a senior in 2002, Nylen picked up First Team All-Conference accolades from the Northeast-10 Conference on two occasions. As a senior, Nylen earned NE10 Defensive Player of the Year honors and capped his career as the College's Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2003.
As a key member of the Hawks defense, he helped the team to its first two NCAA Division II tournament appearances. Saint Anselm won the ECAC Division II and NE10 Championships during Nylen's freshman season and later added another conference championship in 2001.
Following his Saint Anselm career, Nylen enjoyed a lengthy professional career with stops in the United Soccer League's First and Second divisions. He began his coaching career at Amherst and Boston College as an assistant before joining FIU.
Nylen is part of a fraternity of NCAA soccer coaches that have played for legendary Hawks head coach Ed Cannon on the Hilltop. Mark Krikorian '83 is currently the Head Coach of women's soccer at Florida State University and Bruce Dietterle '06 heads up the men's soccer program at the University of Montevallo.
