HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the first quarter the two teams would battle throughout the majority of the fifteen minutes in the midfield, with only three shots being registered. Two of these shots coming from Saint Anselm as junior Millie Forster (Cheshire, England), missing just wide, and senior Chloe Kapsambelis (Merrimack, N.H.) who was turned away by Paige Gillette. Assumption would tally just one-shot form Elle Murry, but strong goal tending from senior Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) would keep the game scoreless through the first period.
  • In the second quarter the Greyhounds would make quick work, earning the first penalty corner in the 17th minute of action. Daisy Stone would step in a feed teammate Murray for a stunning rip and score from the top of the crease, giving the home team a 1-0 advantage. The remainder of the quarter would be controlled by Assumption who would tally five more shots compared to Saint Anselm's none. Going into halftime the home team would lead 1-0.
  • The Hawks exploded out of halftime applying pressure to Gillette as they fired four shots at the keeper, but outstanding saves would keep the team scoreless. In the 34th minute the Greyhounds would earn a penalty stroke. Murray would step in a deliver for the Greyhounds, ripping a shot into the upper 90 of the cage just past Falterer. This would ignite a shift in momentum for the Hawks. The remainder of the period of play would be in the Hawks favor. The team would tally nine shots on target, to go alongside five penalty corners. Finally, in the 43rd minute senior Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) would hear the clang of the back of the cage off of a feed from Marissa Politano (Acton, Mass.), bringing the game to within one score.
  • The fourth quarter would continue the tale of the third as Saint Anselm would continue to fire a response. Lewandowski and Kapsambelis would fire back-to-back shots against Gillette, but the goalie continued to be on her game turning away the shots. Enter fifth year Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.), the senior would take two quick shots, getting Gillette off balance and then would even the game with a beautiful lift into the cage in the 49th minute. This would be the dagger which would force overtime.
  • In the first segment of overtime Assumption would look to attack first as Murray would try for a hat trick but a diving save from Falterer kept the Hawks season alive. A yellow card on the Greyhound would flip momentum to the Hawks and allow for Davis to rip three shots on net but was unable to find the winning score. Then came the second segment of overtime action. After battling through the Greyhounds back line Laurentien van den Akker (Geldrop, The Netherlands) would slide the ball to teammate Forster who scored the biggest game winning goal of her career thus far, ending Assumption's season and extending Saint Anselm's.
