PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey closes regular season with home-and-home against Southern N.H.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team concludes its regular season with a home-and-home series against Queen City Cup rival Southern New Hampshire University on Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19. Friday's puck drop comes from the Ice Den in Hooksett, N.H. at 7:40 p.m.

The Hawks netted their fourth consecutive win on Feb. 15, downing Post University by a 5-2 score. Saint Anselm is now 12-10-2 on the season with a 9-5-2 mark against the Northeast-10 Conference. The Hawks will await the conclusion of play on Tuesday, Feb. 22 to learn their opponent for their NE10 Ice Hockey Championship First Round contest, which will be played on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The Penmen captured the NE10's regular season title on Feb. 16 after capturing a 4-3 win over Stonehill College in overtime. Southern New Hampshire is 15-6-0 overall with a 13-3-0 record in league contests. The Penmen have bye in the First Round and will host a semifinal game on Tuesday, Mar. 1.

Prior to the start of Saturday's regular season finale, the Hawks will honor its six senior student-athletes in Sean Healy (Quincy, Mass.), Trevor Hott (Idaho Falls, Idaho), Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.), Alex Daccord (North Andover, Mass.), and Kevin Ouellete (Arlington, Mass.) in a pregame senior day ceremony. The Hawks will also recognize two senior managers, Liam Barnacle and Sean Costello.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Post, thanks to goals from junior Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) and Iacullo. After two third period goals by the Eagles, sophomore Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and junior Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.) combined for three goals in the game's final 5:55, pushing the Hawks to a 5-2 win.
  • Since concluding its non-conference slate on Jan. 22 at NCAA Division I Long Island University, the Hawks are 6-1-1 and are winners in their last four contests.
  • Andary, who is a semifinalist for the prestigious Joe Concannon Award, leads the NE10 in points with 33. He is second in both goals (16) and assists (17). Andary has recorded at least one point in all but seven games this season.
  • Sophomore Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) rank second and third on the squad in points with 22 and 20, respectively. Schwartz has scored nine goals while assisting on 13 others while Hayes has lit the lamp nine times and registered 11 assists.
  • Junior net minder Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) has turned aside 605 shots on goal this season, which puts him in seventh on the all-time Saint Anselm men's ice hockey single season saves leader board. He has a .908 save percentage with a 2.69 goals-against average, leading the conference in goals-against average while ranking fifth in save percentage.
  • The Hawks sit in second place in the NE10 standings with a .625 winning percentage. Saint Anselm sits in front of Assumption University who enters the weekend with a .607 winning percentage and four games left on its slate.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Ryan Coady netted the game-winning goal in Wednesday's overtime win over Stonehill. Phil Heisse, Travis Quigley, and Ethan Rodriguez netted the other three goals for the Penmen.
  • For the first time in 16 years, the Penmen captured the NE10 regular season title with the win over the Skyhawks.
  • George Thurston leads the NE10 in goals with 17 while ranking second in points with 28. He has added 11 assists on the season. Thurston and Joseph Fiorino are both semifinalists for the Joe Concannon Award.
  • Jake Cox leads the conference with 19 helpers while Fiorino ranks third with 14 assists. Six student-athletes havs recorded double-digit assists for Southern New Hampshire this season.
  • Adam Mercer has started 13 games for Southern New Hampshire. He has a .919 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against average. In goals against, Mercer ranks second in the conference while leading in save percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • This will be the 49th and 50th meetings in the all-time series between the Hawks and Penmen. Saint Anselm is 37-10-1 against Southern New Hampshire.
  • Earlier this season, the Penmen snapped a five-game unbeaten streak for the Hawks with a 6-4 win on Nov. 19. Saint Anselm trailed early but goals by Healy, Andary, and sophomore Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) got the Hawks to within one. However, Thurston would net his second and third goals of the game which aided the Penmen to the two-goal victory.
  • In 15 games when playing as the away team, the Hawks are 11-4-0 compared to a 21-6-0 record at home. The programs have played once in a neutral site contest, resulting in a win for Saint Anselm on Feb. 17, 2018 from the SNHU Arena.
