PREVIEW: Women's basketball plays host to Southern New Hampshire, Dominican (N.Y.)

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team opens its 2022-23 season with five consecutive home games, including three in a row later this week as part of the Saint Anselm Challenge.

The Hawks will welcome Southern New Hampshire and Dominican (N.Y.) to campus starting Friday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. In that tilt, Saint Anselm will battle the Penmen in non-conference play. The Chargers will then play the Penmen on Saturday before tangling with the Hawks on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Admission to each game is $10, payable at the door starting one hour before the opening tip. Tickets are valid only for the individual game. Each contest will be live streamed and feature live statistics.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm is projected to finish seventh in the Northeast-10 Conference, according to the league's Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Hawks compiled a 15-13 overall record last year while winning 10 of its 19 games in conference play.
  • Last season, the Hawks defeated American International in the First Round of the NE10 postseason in February 2022 before falling at Le Moyne by a narrow 64-60 margin in the Quarterfinals round. Saint Anselm was ranked 10th in the final iteration of the official NCAA Division II regional rankings in 2022.
  • The owner of 75 career wins at Saint Anselm and the program's first East Region Championship in 2018-19, Head Coach Corey Boilard enters his sixth year on the Hilltop and has mentored each of the league's last two NE10 Players of the Year (Shannon Ryan '20, Peyton Steinman '22).
  • Returning for Saint Anselm is junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.), the NE10 Rookie of the Year in 2021-22 and a Third Team All-Conference selection for the Hawks. Averaging 15.7 points per game, Turco knocked down 48 three-point baskets and contributed with 4.4 rebounds per game. Scoring 439 points on the season, Turco's stellar season was the second-best by a rookie in team history.
  • Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) begins her second season on the Hilltop, recording 6.6 points and 4.0 rebounds for the Hawks in her freshman campaign. In total, Saint Anselm will see 10 student-athletes from last year's roster return for the 2022-23 campaign.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

  • Southern New Hampshire had a strong season in 2021-22, racking up 21 victories in 28 games and earning the privilege to host the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. The Penmen bowed out of both the NE10 and NCAA postseason in one game, ending the year on a two-game losing skid.
  • The Penmen captured their first NE10 Regular Season Championship after producing a 15-4 record in league play. The team also fell just one win shy of matching a program record as part of its strong campaign.
  • SNHU was picked to finish fifth in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll revealed in mid-October. The Penmen also picked up a first-place vote in recognition of their strong 2021-22 campaign and the fact that seven student-athletes return for long-time Head Coach Karen Pinkos.
  • Adriana Timberlake was the team's third leading scorer last season, averaging just shy of 13 points per game, and Jess Knight also returns to the fold for SNHU after compiling 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per tilt a season ago.
  • Southern New Hampshire posted a 91-43 loss at Providence (NCAA Division I) in exhibition play on Oct. 25.

SCOUTING DOMINICAN (N.Y.)

  • The Chargers posted a 14-14 overall record while logging a 9-8 record against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponents. The team fell to the University of the Sciences in the Quarterfinals round of the CACC Championship, 58-40.
  • Dominican is projected to finish second in the North Division of the CACC, trailing only Post. The Chargers also picked up three out of a possible 12 first-place votes in the coaches' poll.
  • Alexis Suarez is the top returning scorer for the Chargers. She posted exactly 12 points per game for Dominican, adding 4.4 assists per game to lead the team. Additionally, she racked up 2.96 steals per game to rank 12th in all of NCAA Division II.
  • The Chargers are coached by Bill Diener, who owns a 162-166 (.494) overall record during a 12-season career at the institution. In the last two seasons of play, Dominican is 26-16 (.619).

ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, DOMINICAN (N.Y.)

  • This will be the 74th meeting in the all-time series between Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire – the Hawks own a 52-21 record. Saint Anselm has won nine of the last 11 meetings but has dropped two of the last three.
  • Saint Anselm is 4-3 all-time against Dominican (N.Y.). The Hawks most recently fell to the Chargers on the road by a 77-43 margin.
  • The Hawks have won all three of their games against the Chargers when playing at home in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
