MANCHESTER, N.H. – After an extended layoff, the Saint Anselm College baseball team returns to action on Friday, Apr. 23 to begin a four-game series with the Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College at high noon.
The Hawks last played on Saturday, April 10 and will look to snap a four-game losing streak. Saint Anselm begins the game with a 6-11 record, having lost nine of the team's first 10 games against Northeast-10 Conference opponents.
The well-rested Hawks will take on a Saint Michael's outfit that has lost 12 of its first 13 games of the year, including nine consecutive contests. The Purple Knights won their lone game of the season on Thursday, Apr. 8 by a 3-2 margin over Stonehill, using a diving, highlight reel catch to secure the win.
Live Statistics and Live Video will be provided for the four-game series. Fans, parents and students are expected to familiarize themselves with the on-campus Spectator Policy – only Saint Anselm students, staff and faculty will be permitted to attend the games on campus.
Saint Anselm will honor its senior student-athletes on Saturday with a pre-game ceremony.
SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
- The Hawks rank seventh in NCAA Division II and lead the Northeast-10 in double plays with 15 on the season. Saint Anselm turns an average of 0.88 double plays per game, ranking seventh in the country. The Hawks also feature the country's 30th-ranked strikeouts-per-nine-innings metric (10.4).
- Saint Anselm has slugged 23 home runs on the season and despite not playing a game since Apr. 10, the Hawks still remain atop the NE10. The team also has been hit by a pitch 23 times, the league-leading figure, and has rapped 33 doubles, the second-most in the conference.
- Saint Anselm secured a victory over No. 23-ranked Franklin Pierce earlier in the season, snapping a 17-game losing streak to the Ravens while earning the team's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since Mar. 27, 2014.
- Brady Doran (Stony Brook, N.Y.) is tied for the team lead with five home runs on the season and owns Saint Anselm's longest hitting streak at three games. Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) and Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) have the longest hitting streaks of the Hawks season, picking up a hit in eight consecutive games earlier this year.
- Pierro has reached base in each of the last 11 games, the longest active streak on the roster. He has posted a .513 on-base percentage through 11 games on the year and is batting .424 on the year with 14 hits in 33 at-bats.
- Junior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) leads the way with 21 runs batted in on the year and has four multiple-RBI games this year. He is tied with Doran for five home runs.
- Hawks pitchers will look to improve upon a 7.55 team earned-run average. The Hawks have conceded 108 earned runs in just over 128 innings, striking out 149 batters on the season but issuing over 100 walks to date.
- Will Conaton (Windham, N.H.) leads the way with a 4.50 earned-run average. He has fanned 37 batters in 28 innings.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
- The Purple Knights enter play with a .198 team batting average, but are led by a .256 average by Danté Moran. Three of his 11 hits on the season have gone for extra bases. He has also matched two others for the team lead with six runs batted in.
- Saint Michael's has swiped 15-of-18 bases successfully on the year, led by four thefts from Ulysses Luciano. The Purple Knights have conceded 41 stolen bases on 42 attempts to date.
- Jared Duquette, a freshman, leads the Saint Michael's pitching staff with a 3.44 earned-run average across 18.1 innings of work. He has struck out 10 batters and issued just seven walks. As a team, Saint Michael's has 66 strikeouts pitched with 78 walks yielded by Purple Knights hurlers.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S
- The Hawks enjoy a 26-20 overall record against their Green Mountain State counterparts.
- The very first meeting between both programs is thought to have been May 29, 1916. In that contest, Saint Anselm fell to Saint Michael's by a 4-0 margin in Colchester, Vt. The hosts finished the season with a 7-3 record.
- After a lengthy hiatus, Saint Michael's brought back its baseball program prior to the 1990 season. That year, the Hawks split with the Purple Knights in a doubleheader played in Colchester. The Hawks fell by a 5-4 score in the opener before rallying for a 11-1 win in the second game.
- Saint Michael's elected to play an independent schedule from 1999 to 2011, rejoining the NE10 in 2012.
