Saint Anselm College

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – In its first-ever meeting against Lake Erie College, the Saint Anselm College football team was defeated by a final score of 35-7 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.

Highlights

• Senior Jude Santana led the receiving effort, making five receptions for 61 yards, including a long of 21 yards. He also led the returning efforts with three kickoff returns for 59 yards and one punt return for 19 yards. In total, Santana ended the day with 139 all-purpose yards.
• Freshman Dylan Reed recorded in the lone score of the game for the Hawks on his first career reception, a 15-yard fade route pass thrown by junior Nick Caro.
• Caro was 19-for-26 (73.1%) in his first collegiate start, amassing 183 yards through the air with one touchdown pass. Caro hooked up with nine different receivers in the setback, with three or more catches coming from Santana (5), sophomore Kilan Jean-Paul Perry (3), and junior Gus O'Gara (3).
• Sophomores Tyler Villalta and Jermaine Sheppherd Jr. each netted 19 yards on the ground. Sheppherd Jr. registered the Hawks' longest return of the day, taking a kickoff back 29 yards.
• Senior Nate Kearney, in his first game as a Hawk, led Saint Anselm with six tackles along with juniors Tobi Popoola and Jason Paganis. The trio each made three solo tackles.
• Sophomore Gavin Fucile was in on both of the Hawks' sacks in the contest, recording a combined loss of 22 yards on two tackles for loss.
• Seniors Jon Hosney and Jonah Bassett and sophomore Kaeden Reyes each notched one pass breakup. Hosney had four tackles, followed by Bassett with three and Reyes with one.
• Senior Michael Guarnieri went 1-for-1 on PATs and averaged 32.5 yards over two kickoffs, which included one touchback.
• Freshman James Warren was busy in his collegiate debut, notching six punts with a long of 38 yards.

How it Happened

Lake Erie jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter, scoring on a 4-yard pass from Hunter Newell to Devin Morgan before Julian Means-Flewellen added a 7-yard rushing touchdown. The Storm extended their advantage to 21-0 midway through the second quarter when Tyleik Maxwell hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from Newell. 

Lake Erie added another touchdown early in the third quarter to make it 28-0. Saint Anselm answered on its ensuing possession, with Caro connecting with Reed for a 15-yard touchdown to cap a six-play, 70-yard drive.

The Storm put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter, marching 39 yards on six plays before Hakeem Quran scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown to make it 35-7.
