Football Falls to Bentley in Home Opener, 48-14

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College football team dropped a 48-14 non-conference decision to Bentley University on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.

Highlights

  • Junior quarterback Nick Caro completed 16 of 31 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns. He led the rushing attack with 23 yards on seven carries.
  • Junior wide receiver Gus O'Gara caught two passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, including a 54-yard score.
  • Senior tight end Nick Nelson caught three passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.
  • Sophomore Anthony Phillipo hauled in one pass for 43 yards.
  • Sophomore Kilan Jean-Paul Perry made three catches for 38 yards, including a long of 20.
  • Junior linebacker Liam Stack led the Hawks with nine tackles, followed by senior Jon Hosney with eight.
  • Sophomore linebacker James Pepper Jr. recorded Saint Anselm's only two sacks as part of a six-tackle performance.
  • Sophomore Kaeden Reyes posted four tackles and a team-high two pass breakups.
  • Sophomore Tyler Villalta posted 127 yards on six kickoff returns, with a long of 38.
  • Freshman James Warren booted away eight punts, averaging 35 yards per kick. He registered a career-long of 47, with one touchback.
  • Caro had one punt which pinned the Falcons at their own one-yard line late in the first quarter.
  • The Hawks limited the Falcons to a 2-for-12 showing on third downs.

How it Happened

Saint Anselm opened the scoring on its second possession, as Caro connected with O'Gara for a 54-yard touchdown with 11:53 remaining in the first quarter. Bentley responded with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead, with Cooper Marcum hauling in a 20-yard touchdown pass before Isaiah Osgood scored on a 12-yard rushing touchdown.

Bentley added a 24-yard field goal midway through the second quarter before Peter Bibby III scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown with 1:47 remaining in the half, sending the Falcons into the break with a 24-7 advantage.

The Falcons extended their lead in the third quarter, with Nate Day catching a 41-yard touchdown pass from Luke Warnock before a 29-yard Bentley field goal made it 34-7.

Bentley added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Marcum caught his second touchdown pass of the afternoon, this one covering 26 yards.

Saint Anselm answered with 7:37 remaining, as Caro found Nelson for a 10-yard touchdown to cap a seven-play, 77-yard drive. Bentley responded just over a minute later, however, as Osgood broke loose for an 82-yard touchdown run to account for the final margin.

Bentley finished with 602 yards of total offense, including 292 rushing yards and 310 passing yards. Saint Anselm totaled 259 yards, with Caro accounting for 216 through the air.

Saint Anselm (0-2) returns to action Saturday, Sept. 19 when the Hawks host Franklin Pierce University (0-1) at Grappone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
