Second-Half Goals Lift Women’s Soccer Past AIC

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-0 shutout victory over American International College in NE10 play on Wednesday at Melucci Field.

Sophomore Madison Botta opened the scoring less than a minute into the second half before junior Meghan Deneen doubled the Hawks' advantage in the 73rd minute. Junior Amarys Jimenez assisted on both goals as Saint Anselm improved to 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Highlights

  • Botta scored just 55 seconds into the second half to give Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead. The goal marked her second of the season, with both serving as game-winning goals.
  • Deneen added her third goal of the season in the 73rd minute, tying her for the team lead in goals with sophomore Connie Patturelli and freshman Scarlett Flint.
  • Jimenez assisted on both goals, giving her a team-high four assists and six points through six appearances.
  • Junior goalkeeper Samantha Swidorski recorded the shutout, making three saves across 90 minutes.
  • The Hawks held a 20-10 advantage in shots, including 9-4 in shots on goal, and earned seven corner kicks compared to three for AIC. 
How it Happened
Saint Anselm generated the first scoring opportunity just over a minute into the match when Jimenez put a shot on goal that was stopped by American International goalkeeper Hedda Haukland. The Yellow Jackets threatened in the 13th minute with a shot off the crossbar. 

Jimenez forced Haukland into saves in the 30th and 33rd minutes before Flint put another shot on goal in the 34th. Saint Anselm finished the opening half with a 9-4 advantage in shots, but the match remained scoreless at halftime.

The Hawks broke through just 55 seconds after the restart. Jimenez drove the ball down the right side of the field before sending a cross into the box to set up Botta for the opening goal at the 45:55 mark, giving Saint Anselm a 1-0 advantage.

Saint Anselm doubled its lead in the 73rd minute following back-to-back corner kicks. Jimenez sent a corner kick into the box, where Deneen headed the ball into the net to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage. Deneen nearly added another goal in the 83rd minute, but her attempt hit the right post.
