COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Anselm College baseball team took two of Friday's Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Michael's College to split the first of two games in the weekend series.
Game 1 – Saint Anselm 6 (21-20, 19-14 NE10) Saint Michael's 14 (19-23, 17-16 NE10) - 9 inn.
Highlights
- Sophomore Coleson Kaluza went 1-for-4 with one hit, two runs, two walks, and one RBI.
- Freshman Jake Smith went 2-for-4 with two hits, two RBI, and a walk.
- Junior Adam McGowan allowed just one earned run and struck out four of the fifteen-faced Purple Knights.
How it Happened
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in each of the first two innings. Sophomore
George Slauson drove in the first with an RBI double, and Kaluza followed with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 2–0 advantage.
The Purple Knights responded in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on one hit and two errors to take a 3–2 lead. Saint Michael's kept the momentum in the third inning, adding another run on an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 2–4.
In the top of the fourth, Kaluza reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. With the stolen base, the Hawks broke the single-season record for stolen bases. Junior
Mavrick Bourdeau then brought Kaluza home with an RBI single to left field, cutting the deficit to 3–4.
Saint Michael's responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with three hits and earned another run to put the Hawks in another two-run deficit at 3-5.
Sophomore
Xavier Gonzalez extended his hitting streak with a single in the top of the fifth inning, followed by a walk from fellow sophomore
Peter Fischer to put two runners on for Saint Anselm. Smith earned an RBI single to score Gonzalez and advanced Fischer to third, cutting the deficit to one.
The Purple Knights offense surged in the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs scored to make the score 4-10. Saint Michael's scoring continued in the sixth inning, tallying another four runs to extend the lead to 4-14.
In the seventh inning, Fischer, Smith, and junior
Austin Brune each recorded singles to load the bases. Sophomore
Gavin Rigney then reached on a fielding error, allowing Fischer and Smith to score.
Both teams remained scoreless through the ninth, as the Purple Knights closed out game one of the series with a final score of 6-14.
Game 2 – Saint Anselm 11 (22-20, 20-14 NE10) Saint Michael's 2 (19-24, 17-17 NE10) - 7 inn.
Highlights
- Junior Caden Smith earned his third win of the season, allowing just five hits and one walk over four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
- Kaluza went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
- Bourdeau went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Junior Brendan Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a career high five RBIs.
- Fischer went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
- The Hawks totaled 11 runs on 11 hits, with no errors in the victory.
How it Happened
Kaluza opened the hitting for the Hawks in game two with a single up the left side of the field. Bourdeau walked to have baserunners on first and second. X. Gonzalez continued his hitting streak with a single to the shortstop, allowing Kaluza and Bourdeau to score on a throwing error to first base to put the Hawks up 2-0.
Fischer singled through the right side, allowing X. Gonzalez to advance to third. B. Gonzalez then recorded a double to allow Fischer and X. Gonzalez to score to put the Hawks up 4-0 to close out the first inning.
In the second inning, Kaluza singled to left center field, followed by a double from Bourdeau to allow Kaluza to score to make the score 5-0.
Kaluza's hot streak in game two continued with another single in the fourth inning, followed by a pair of singles from Bourdeau and Slauson to tally another run and make the score 6-0.
The dominance continued in the fourth inning for the Hawks with the bases loaded; Fischer was hit by a pitch, allowing Bourdeau to score. B. Gonzalez tripled to right center field to clear the bases and tallied three more runs to put the Purple Knights down 10-0.
In the fifth inning, both Rigney and Kaluza were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second base. Sophomore
Jackson Powers singled off the first base bag, allowing Rigney to score to put the Hawks up 11-0 to close out the fifth.
The Purple Knights were able to score two runs in the seventh inning, but couldn't surpass the Hawks' 11-run effort.

The Hawks (22-20, 20-14 NE10) will close out the regular season at Saint Michael's College (19-24, 17-17 NE10) on Saturday, May 2 with a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Baseball Field.
