CARY, N.C. – The Saint Anselm baseball team split their second day of competition at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, taking the first game of the day 4-2 over Walsh University 4-2, before dropping game two against Dominican University (N.Y.), 3-2.
GAME 1 – Saint Anselm 4, (2-4), Walsh University 2 (4-6)
Highlights
- Sophomore George Slauson went 2-3 at the plate, hitting two doubles while driving in three runs.
- Junior Andrew Chenevert earned his second win of the season, delivering 6.1 innings for the Hawks, while only allowing two runs, zero walks and six strikeouts.
- Freshman relief pitcher Finn Ramseyer came in for Chenevert in the seventh inning, throwing a perfect 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.
How it Happened
The Hawks started strong as
Slauson lined a double to right field with runners on first and second, driving in the first two runs in the opening frame.
Chenevert held Walsh scoreless through the first four innings, but the Cavaliers drove in a run on an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.
Slauson came through again in the sixth, hitting his second double of the game, bringing sophomore
Jackson Powers in to score for the second time.
Junior
Mavrick Bourdeau brought home sophomore Charlie Petruney on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 and the Saint Anselm pitching closed out a dominant day on the mound to secure the win.
GAME 2 – Dominican (N.Y.) 3 (3-6), Saint Anselm 2 (2-5)
Highlights
- Bourdeau led the Hawks with two hits in four at bats, scoring one of the Hawks two runs.
- Power was hitless in the loss but drove in junior Nathaniel Leighton on a sacrifice fly to tally an RBI.
- Junior Brendan Gonzalez went 1-3 with an RBI single.
- Freshman Preston Cote dropped to 0-1 on the season, making his first career start, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
- Senior Andrew MacDonald had an excellent showing in relief, throwing 3.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
How it Happened
Dominican loaded the bases in the second but managed to plate just one run in the innings, and the Hawks would tie things up in the third on a sacrifice fly from Powers, plating Leighton.
The Chargers scored twice in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run and an RBI double, taking a 3-1 lead.
The Hawks chipped away at their deficit after Gonzalez ripped an RBI single to centerfield in the sixth innings to make it a 3-2 game.
The pitching for both Dominican and Saint Anselm dominated for the remainder of the game as neither team could muster any runs, as the Hawks fell, 3-2.
