How it Happened
Wayne State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, and added another run to its lead in the second inning after an error by the Hawks third baseman. After the third inning saw both teams finish scoreless, the Wildcats used back-to-back triples to spark a three-run inning, building a 5-0 edge in the fourth.
After a slow start offensively, the Hawks' bats came alive in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs in the frame, all with two outs. Gonzalez ripped a single to left field with the bases loaded to drive in two runs and Saint Anselm took a 7-5 lead on an error by Wayne State's second baseman to cap off a high-scoring half-inning. The Wildcats leadoff hitter in the bottom of the fifth launched a leadoff homerun to make it 7-6 but the Hawks answered with another run in the top of the sixth to keep a two-run edge, 8-6.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh, Wayne State was able to plate both runners on a single to center field after a throwing error, as the score was tied up 8-8. The next two innings were scoreless until the Wildcats walked things off in the bottom of the tenth on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield, winning the game in extra innings, 9-8.
