Combined No-Hitter from Chenevert and Ramseyer Highlights Baseball’s Sweep of SCSU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Andrew Chenevert and freshman Finn Ramseyer combined to secure a no-hitter in game two of a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader as the Saint Anselm College baseball team secured a sweep of Southern Connecticut State University at The Ballpark at SCSU on Friday afternoon.

This marks the first no-hitter for the Saint Anselm baseball program since May 8, 2005 when Ryan Fecteau '05 shut out American International College in a nine-inning outing, allowing two baserunners while striking out 11 Yellow Jackets in a 1-0 victory.

Game 1 – Saint Anselm (6-10) 10, Southern Connecticut State (4-13) 4

Highlights

  • Sophomore Coleson Kaluza went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.

  • Sophomore George Slauson posted three RBI on three hits and scored twice.

  • Junior Caden Smith earned the win over a five-inning performance, notching eight strikeouts while allowing one earned run on seven hits and one walk.

  • Over four innings of relief, sophomore Jake Schoenberg allowed only two hits and one run, striking out three Owls in the process, to earn his first save.

How it Happened

The Hawks started the series off with a bang scoring three runs in the first inning with three consecutive RBI singles from junior Brendan Gonzalez, sophomore Peter Fischer and junior Austin Brune.

SCSU tied it up at 3-3 in the fourth inning before the Hawks answered back in the bottom of the inning with freshman Dylan Ruff scoring off a wild pitch. His run kickstarted a string of runs from the Hawks who increased their lead to 8-3 in the fourth with Bourdeau and Slauson each notching RBI singles in the frame.

In the seventh, the Hawks increased their lead to 9-3 with a solo homer from Kaluza. Slauson scored the Hawks' last run of the game with a single to left field, knocking in Bourdeau, who reached on a bunt single, to boost Saint Anselm's advantage to seven runs.

The Owls made a final attempt in the ninth with a solo homer from the leadoff batter, but Schoenberg closed the game by securing three straight groundouts.

Game 2 – Saint Anselm (7-10) 9, Southern Connecticut State 0 (4-14)

Highlights

  • Junior Andrew Chenevert earned his fifth win of the season to improve to 5-0. With five strikeouts over six complete innings of scoreless work, he allowed just two baserunners on two walks and no hits.

  • Freshman Finn Ramseyer closed the game, striking out one to shut down the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the combined no-hitter.

  • Slauson went 2-for-2 at the plate, highlighted by a three-run homer in the fifth.

  • Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. He scored two runs with two runs knocked in.

  • Fischer went 2-for-3 with one double, an RBI, and a run scored.

  • Throughout game two, Saint Anselm had five stolen bases recorded by four different Hawks, led by Gonzalez's two-steal outing.

How it Happened

The Hawks started early again with one run in the first from Ruff with a sacrifice fly to score Gonzelez. Saint Anselm went up 2-0 with Gonzalez's RBI double to right to score Kaluza in the third.

The fifth inning was a productive one for the Hawks who scored four times to make it a 6-0 ballgame. Gonzalez, Fischer, Leighton, and Ruff each knocked in a run over the frame.

Slauson closed the scoring out in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run blast to make it 9-0, providing late run support.

Ramseyer closed out the game with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, striking out the last hitter of the game to close out the no-hitter.
