Baseball Splits Sunday NE10 Doubleheader at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split its second doubleheader at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field against Adelphi University on Sunday to split the weekend series. The Hawks rallied late to win game one 5-4 before dropping the second contest by a score of 16-6 in seven innings.

GAME 1 – Saint Anselm 5 (4-7), Adelphi 4 (4-7)

Highlights
  • Sophomore Luke Douglas had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two doubles, a run batted in, and a run scored.
  • Junior Austin Brune had two base hits, drove in one run, scored a run, and stole a base in the win.
  • Sophomore Coleson Kaluza reached base three times, hitting a single and walking twice while picking up a stolen base.
  • Sophomore Jackson Powers scored the game-winning run, drove in the game-tying run, and had two base hits.
  • Out of the nine-spot in the order, freshman Connor Rumph went 1-3 with a double and a run batted in.
  • Sophomore Peter Fischer went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Freshman Preston Cote got the start for the Hawks, his second of the season, pitching the first 2.1 innings, allowing five hits, five walks, and three earned runs with a strikeout.
  • Freshman Brady Gillis entered the game in relief, making his second appearance of the season as he improved to 1-1, pitching 3.2 innings, striking out three while allowing one run on four hits.
  • Sophomore Josh Bryant earned the first save of the season for any Saint Anselm pitcher, the second of his career, striking out two in his one inning of work.
How it Happened
With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Panthers had runners on first and second, and the Hawks were unable to escape the inning unscathed as an RBI single got Adelphi on the board.

The Hawks tied things up in the second after a leadoff double from Douglas, eventually scoring from third on a double play. Rumph broke the tie with an RBI double down the left field line later in the inning, plating Brune, who had previously reached on a single.

Adelphi drew three straight walks to start the bottom half of the second, and two runs would come across on a bases-loaded single as the Panthers regained the lead, 3-2. Fischer led off the fourth with a double to start 2-2 on the day, and Brune drove him in with an RBI single to tie the score 3-3.

Three singles from the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth broke the tie, as Adelphi took a 4-3 lead into the final inning. Down to their last out, the Hawks came through with some clutch hitting as Powers singled up the middle to drive in Kaluza from third, tying the game at 4-4, and Douglas came through with the winning run, driving in Powers on an RBI double.

Bryant shut the door on any chance of a comeback for the Panthers, pitching a 1-2-3 inning to secure the save and the 5-4 win for the Hawks.

GAME 2 – Adelphi 16 (5-7), Saint Anselm 6 (4-8)

Highlights
  • Sophomore Coleson Kaluza logged three leadoff singles over four at-bats.
  • Junior George Slauson had a solid day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
  • Junior Mavrick Bordeau got back on track, going 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and snagging two impressive line-drives for outs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Junior Austin Brune had one base hit in four at-bats and made a difficult running snag on a fly ball hit deep in the gap between center and right field.
How it Happened
The contest started off competitive, with the Hawks taking a 2-0 lead in the first, scoring on an RBI double from Bordeau and a sacrifice fly from Slauson. The Panthers quickly countered to go up 3-2 in the bottom of the first.

Saint Anselm was able to put runners on base in the second, with junior Brendan Gonzalez reaching second on an error and Brune getting on base with a single. Gonzalez would manage to steal third, but the Hawks left the second empty-handed after hitting into a double play.

The Hawks tied the game at 3-3 in the third with another sacrifice fly from Slauson, but went down once again in the fourth inning as the Panthers knocked two in to take a 5-3 advantage.

After an explosive stretch for the Panthers in the fifth and sixth innings that put the Hawks in a 14-4 deficit, the Hawks scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it an eight-run game. The Panthers went on to walk it off in the bottom half, securing the series split.
