Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Adelphi to Open NE10 Play

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split its first of two doubleheaders on the road at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field against Adelphi as the Hawks opened Northeast 10 Conference play this weekend. After falling short of making a nine-run comeback in game one, losing 13-12 in nine innings, the Hawks secured the win in game two with a dominant 18-4 victory in seven innings.

GAME 1 – Adelphi 13 (4-5), Saint Anselm 12 (2-7)

Highlights
  • Junior Brendan Gonzalez led the Hawks' offense in game one, recording two hits, one of which was a home run, in four at-bats with three runs batted in, and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore Peter Fischer also had a solid day at the plate, tallying a home run while driving in three runs on two hits in four plate appearances.
  • Four different Hawks homered in the game, Gonzalez, Fischer, and sophomores Coleson Kaluza and George Slauson.
How it Happened
It was all Adelphi early on as the Panthers scored six unanswered runs before the Hawks got on the board. The Hawks first run of the day crossed home plate on an RBI single to left from junior Mavrick Bourdeau. Saint Anselm would surrender four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go down 10-1.

The top of the seventh was a turning point, as the Hawks roared to life and put a serious dent in the Adelphi lead. Kaluza rocketed a home run to start the comeback, driving in Gonzalez to narrow the margin at 10-3. Slauson drove in Bordeau to make it 10-4, and sophomore Luke Douglas also logged an RBI by poking a single on the left side that drove in sophomore Jackson Powers. Fischer would come up huge for the Hawks, blasting a three-run homer to make the score 10-8 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Hawks took a 12-11 lead in the top of the eighth after a solo homer from Slauson and a three-run homer from Gonzalez, but the Panthers responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth before eventually walking it off with an RBI single to take the game one victory, 13-12.

GAME 2 – Saint Anselm 18 (3-7), Adelphi 4 (4-6)

Highlights
  • The Hawks offense was firing on all cylinders in game two, scoring 18 runs on 14 hits with eight stolen bases to secure the win.
  • Junior Andrew Chenevert had a solid outing on the mound, recording the win while allowing four runs with six strikeouts, pitching all seven innings. With the victory, Chenevert imrpoves to 3-0 on the season.
  • Kaluza had another big game for the Hawks, recording one hit while driving in four runs in two plate appearances, including a bases-clearing, three-run triple in the seventh.
  • After splitting the first day of doubleheaders, the Hawks move to 9-14 all time against the Panthers in a series going back to 2009.
How it Happened
Adelphi got on the board first with a solo homer to open the contest, but the Hawks quickly found the equalizer in the second on an RBI single from Gonzalez that drove Slauson home. Saint Anselm would tack on two more runs in the second inning with RBI knocks from junior Nathaniel Leighton and freshman Connor Rumph.

The offensive onslaught continued in the third and fourth innings, with the Hawks scoring on an RBI single from Fischer, a sacrifice bunt from Rumph, followed by Slauson stealing home. This would give the Hawks an 8-4 lead at the end of the fourth inning, which held until the beginning of the seventh.

Saint Anselm piled on the insurance runs in the final inning, starting with a base-clearing triple from Kaluza that widened the gap to 11-4. Powers rocketed a double to bring in Kaluza and the Hawks to pad their lead late, with their final run coming by way of Bordeau reaching on a fielder's choice that drove in Leighton.

The Panthers were unable to mount a late comeback, and Saint Anselm left game two with an 18-4 victory. Despite splitting the doubleheader, the Hawks outscored the Panthers 30-17 on the day and ended day one by scoring 10 unanswered runs.
