MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team, ranked third in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Poll, kept Frostburg State University off the board in the second half as the Hawks rolled to a 14-5 non-conference victory in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.
Highlights
- Ben Turpin set a career-high with a six-point output as he led the Hawks' offense with four goals and two assists.
- Senior Chris Claflin (2-3-5) and sophomore Matt Lemay (3-2-5) each posted five points. Claflin reached the 100-point milestone with his offensive output, sitting at 101 for his career.
- Senior Charlie Dean recorded a hat trick in the triumph.
- Freshman Nate Mulvey recorded his first collegiate goal, representing one of four Hawks who posted one point. Senior Nicholas Palermo and sophomore Eddie O'Brien each found the back of the net once while junior Thomas Driscoll added one assist.
- Senior Quinn Gannon took all 23 faceoffs for Saint Anselm, winning 16 (69.6%) notching a team-high 10 ground balls in the process.
- Junior Jake Klepacki led the Hawks defensive unit with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
- Sophomore Max Fowler, junior Nate Johnson, and senior Tyler Vigeant notched two ground balls apiece.
- Junior Finn Granara made nine saves over 58:30 of action as Saint Anselm outshot the Bobcats 24-13 in his first victory of the campaign. Freshman Cam Sinclair made his collegiate debut, coming in for the final 1:30 of action.
- The Hawks won the ground ball battle, 31-22.
- Saint Anselm was nearly perfect on clears, going 18-for-19 (94.7%).
- Of Frostburg State's 23 caused turnovers, the Hawks caused eight.
- The Hawks now hold a 2-0 record against Frostburg State, with victories coming in back-to-back season openers.
- Saint Anselm kept the Bobcats off the board for the final 35:31 of the contest, marking the second-longest drought caused by the Hawks defense under the direction of second-year head coach Drew Bourdeau '18. The Hawks previously blanked Adelphi University for the opening 35:38 in their 9-6 win over the Panthers on April 5, 2025.
- Frostburg State's four goals marked the lowest goals allowed by the Hawks since March 22, 2025, when Saint Anselm downed Franklin Pierce University by a score of 10-2.
How it Happened
The Hawks got out to a 3-0 lead 5:35 into the first quarter with Claflin recorded one goal and one assist in that span. Following a Bobcats goal with 7:10 to play in the first to make it 3-1, Dean found the back of the net twice in a span of 2:32 to increase the Hawks' lead to four goals. Frostburg State finished off the first quarter with a goal off the stick of Henry Sykes with eight seconds left in the opening frame to cut the deficit to three after one.
Dean completed his hat trick 2:37 into the second on an unassisted tally, which was answered by Frostburg State's Hayden Celio 1:06 later to make it 6-3. Goals from Turpin and Mulvey grew the Hawks' lead to five goals with 6:40 to play in the half before a man-up Bobcats goal made it 8-4 with 5:31 left in the half.
The Hawks would close out the game on a 7-0 run over the final 33 minutes of play as Turpin and Lemay each posted a pair of goals in that span.
