Baseball Splits Doubleheader at East Stroudsburg for First Win of the Season

STROUDSBURG, Pa. –  The Saint Anselm College baseball team split its season-opening doubleheader on the road against East Stroudsburg University to start the season 1-1. The Hawks dropped the first game with a score of 2-0 but bounced back and got the offense going with a dominant 8-4 victory in game two, snapping a 13-game losing streak in the all-time series with the Warriors.

GAME 1 – East Stroudsburg 2 (4-4), Saint Anselm 0 (0-1)

Highlights

  • The Hawks and Warriors were locked at a 0-0 standstill for the majority of the contest, staying scoreless for the first seven innings.
  • Junior Caden Smith held the Warriors scoreless in six innings pitched, only allowing three hits and recording four strikeouts.
  • The Hawks recorded three double plays in the contest, including one in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on first and second base.

How it Happened

The contest was a defensive battle early on, as Saint Anselm and East Stroudsburg both recorded three hits through the first six innings. Smith kept the Hawks in the game from the mound, escaping the fifth and sixth innings by securing fly outs as East Stroudsburg threatened with runners in scoring position.

Five Hawks recorded hits in the first game of the doubleheader as junior Mavrick Bourdeau and sophomores Jackson Powers, George SlausonPeter Fischer, and Luke Douglas each logged base knocks. Bordeau also managed to take second when East Stroudsburg's pitcher failed to pick him off at first.

With one out and a runner on second, East Stroudsburg secured the victory after a two-run walk-off homer.

GAME 2 – Saint Anselm 8 (1-1), East Stroudsburg 4 (4-5)

Highlights

  • Saint Anselm snapped a 13-game skid to the Warriors to move to 4-15 all-time.
  • Junior righty Andrew Chenevert notched his first win of the season on the mound, allowing only four hits and recording two strikeouts in five innings played.
  • Junior Mavrick Bourdeau and senior Ben Rose powered the Hawks offense from the plate. Bordeau notched three hits and two RBI in five appearances at the plate, with senior Ben Rose also recording three hits and two RBI in his four at-bats.
  • As a team, the Hawks recorded fifteen hits to East Stroudsburg's six.

How it Happened

Saint Anselm got on the board first, recording three hits in the first inning. Jackson Powers and Greg Slauson both recorded singles before a Peter Fischer RBI single drove Powers home to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the top of the first inning. East Stroudsburg responded in the bottom of the first, tacking on two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead.

In the second inning, Ben Rose and Bordeau both got on base and Powers knocked them both home, recording a two-run single to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead after two innings.

After a brief stretch of no scoring, an East Stroudsburg sacrifice fly tied the game up at three apiece in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks offense roared back to life in reply, as the top of the fifth would see Saint Anselm record three hits and three runs. After a Brendan Gonzalez single saw him take second base on a fielder's choice and a Luke Douglas walk, Rose drove both Douglas and Gonzalez home with an RBI single. Later that inning, junior Matteo Cubelo took first after being hit by a pitch and a Bourdeau single sent him home to give the Hawks a 6-3 advantage.

The Hawks would maintain the lead for the rest of the game, adding in two insurance runs in the seventh inning courtesy of Bourdeau and Slauson RBI singles that drove home junior Austin Brune and Bourdeau. An East Stroudsburg run in the bottom of the seventh was too little, too late, giving Saint Anselm its first win of the season.
