How it Happened
The first six points of the game went to the Hawks, but the next eight went to the Purple Knights, setting the stage for a back-and-forth matchup at Stoutenburgh Gym. The Hawks built another two-possession lead, 30-24, after Morissette knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the first half.
Saint Michael's responded once again, tying the score 36-36 as both teams continued to convert on difficult shots. Onyia made a pair of free throw attempts to break the tie right before the half ended as Saint Anselm went into the locker room leading 43-41.
The Purple Knights scored the first bucket of the second half, but the Hawks answered with four consecutive threes and a layup from Davies to take a 12-point lead, their largest of the night, 57-45. Saint Michael's continued to chip away, keeping the Hawks within striking distance, but Guidinger knocked down back-to-back threes to keep the Hawks up by eight, 68-60.
Saint Michael's forced three turnovers during a three-minute stretch, fueling a 12-4 run that knotted the score up at 72-72. Davies ended the run with a reverse layup and two more scores, and a pair of free throws from Rapolis gave the Hawks an eight-point edge, 80-72, with under three minutes remaining in the game.
The Purple Knights put together a comeback attempt with some impressive shot-making, but clutch free-throw shooting secured the 87-82 win for the Hawks.
