Men’s Basketball Clinches Spot in NE10 Championship Game, Defeating No. 4 Assumption 90-77

MANCHESTER, N.H.  – The top-seeded Saint Anselm College men's basketball team advanced to the Northeast 10 Conference Championship game with a 90-77 win over the No. 4-seeded Assumption University at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in the NE10 Semifinals on Wednesday.
 
Highlights
  • This was the 137th all-time meeting between these two programs as Saint Anselm improves to 75-62 overall against Assumption in the series that began in 1936.
  • This was the Hawks and Greyhounds' first postseason matchup since Feb. 26, 2011, a 77-61 win for Saint Anselm.
  • Saint Anselm makes its 16th appearance in the NE10 title game and its first since 2023, when the Hawks won the league. Saint Anselm will look to capture its 11th NE10 championship on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Jovan Ristic scored 16 points with a career-high 16 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season, as he shot 7-9 from the field and 2-2 from three with two assists, one steal, and one block.
  • Senior Josh Morissette scored a game-high 24 points, his third straight game with at least 20 points, shooting 7-14 from the floor with a season-high seven rebounds and four assists.
  • Sophomore Will Davies scored 17 points with five assists, three rebounds, and one steal while classmate Isaiah Griffin tallied 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench.
  • Saint Anselm shot 56.5% (35-62) from the field and outrebounded Assumption 38-35. The Hawks had 17 assists compared to just three for the Greyhounds.
How it Happened
 
Assumption had a strong start offensively, taking a 17-6 lead, knocking down four of their first six three-point attempts. The Hawks responded quickly, making it a two-point game, 21-19, and making five of their next six shots.
 
Saint Anselm took its first lead of the game after back-to-back fadeaway jumpers from Davies and Morissette as the Hawks went up 29-28. This sparked an 18-3 run for Saint Anselm, with Morissette leading the way, scoring eight of the 18, as Saint Anselm led 43-31. Griffin kept the momentum going for the Hawks, sinking a pair of threes to close out the half, with Saint Anselm leading 49-38 at the break.
 
Saint Anselm continued to play well early in the second, converting on seven of its first nine shots, increasing the Hawks' lead to 18, 64-46. Saint Anselm's lead grew to as much as 23, 74-51. The Greyhounds began to chip away at the lead, rattling off an 18-4 run as the Hawks' lead was trimmed to 9 points, 78-69 with under four minutes to play.
 
Davies pulled up for a mid-range jumper, finding the bottom of the net to halt the Assumption run and put Saint Anselm back up by double-digits with 2:47 on the clock. The Greyhounds had another quick response, making the score 80-73, with 1:57 remaining.
 
The Hawks closed out the game at the free-throw line to secure the win, 90-77.

The Saint Anselm men's basketball team (22-7, 14-4 NE10) will host the Northeast 10 Championship game, taking on the No. 6-seeded Saint Michael's College (18-12, 10-8 NE10), at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m., with the game being broadcast on SNY, NBC Sports Philadelphia+, and NESN, along with the digital broadcast on FloCollege.
