Nelson’s Career Day Leads Women’s Basketball Past Adelphi

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Anna Nelson scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team past Adelphi University, 52-42, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Saturday.
 
Highlights
  • Saint Anselm is now 13-10 all-time against Adelphi in 23 meetings between the Hawks and Panthers, a series that began in 2010.
  • The Hawks improve to 9-7 on the year with a 4-7 mark in NE10 play.
  • Nelson's career-high 17 points came on a 6-13 shooting performance, 4-10 mark from deep, also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds.
  • Senior Tatum Forbes scored 11 points with three rebounds and three assists while junior Kaitlin McDonough corralled 13 rebounds with five points, three assists, and a steal.
  • Saint Anselm outrebounded Adelphi 46-27 and held the Panthers to just a 28% (14-50) shooting percentage from the field.
How it Happened
 
The Hawks jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Adelphi missed its first seven shots while McDonough tallied five points and seven rebounds in the first five minutes of play. The Panthers ended the quarter on a 7-3 run, as the Hawks led 13-7 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
 
Saint Anselm continued to play well to open the second, leading by eight, 22-14, but Adelphi closed out the half on a 12-3 run, taking a 26-25 advantage at the half.
 
The Hawks held the Panthers to a 1-9 start from the floor in the second half, as Saint Anselm retook the lead thanks to a pair of Nelson three-pointers that had the Hawks head by five, 33-28. The Saint Anselm lead grew to 12, 40-28, after a three-point play from Forbes. The final five points of the quarter as Saint Anselm led 40-33 going into the fourth.
 
Nelson knocked down two more three-pointers in the fourth while the Hawks' defense continued to play well, leading Saint Anselm to a 52-42 win
