MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 86-78, at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium to remain in first place in the Northeast 10 Conference on Monday.
Highlights
- This marked the 54th all-time meeting between these two programs, with the Hawks improving to 35-19 against Southern Connecticut State in the series that began in 1969.
- Saint Anselm is now 6-1 in league play with a 13-4 record overall, remaining in first place in the NE10.
- Freshman Edward Onyia led the Hawks with 19 points on an efficient 8-9 shooting performance, also going 2-3 from deep with six rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
- Senior Josh Morissette knocked down four three-pointers en route to 17 points with two steals, a rebound, and an assist.
- Sophomore Will Davies scored 14 points with a game-high eight assists and four rebounds.
- Sophomore Jovan Ristic scored 10+ points for the 15th time this season, recording 12 points, seven rebounds, and a steal, shooting 4-5 from the field.
- Saint Anselm outrebounded Southern Connecticut State, 37-34, and led for 84% of the game.
How it Happened
After a slow start, the Hawks converted on eight of nine field goal attempts during an 18-8 run with Onyia going 4-4, scoring 10 points for Saint Anselm to give the Hawks a 23-17 lead. Onyia kept his hot streak going, finishing the first half 7-7 from the field, 2-2 from deep, scoring 17 points.
The Hawks led 42-32 at the half thanks to 30 combined bench points and a 51.5 (17-33) field goal percentage from the floor.
Southern Conn. State started the second half with a 10-4 run to cut their deficit to four, 48-44, but it was all Saint Anselm after that, going on a 19-5 scoring burst to go back up by 18, 67-49.
The Owls rallied late to make it a two-possession game, 79-73, but their comeback was too late in the contest as the Hawks held on to win, 86-78. Morissette and Davies led the way for Saint Anselm with 13 and 12 points in the second half.
