Football Falls at Merrimack, 31-6

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College football team was bested by Division I Merrimack, 31-6, in a Saturday afternoon non-conference clash at Duane Stadium.

With the loss, the Hawks dropped to 1-1 on the season. The Warriors earned their first win of the season to level their record at 1-1.

The contest marked the 23rd in the all-time series between Saint Anselm and Merrimack and was the first since 2021. The Warriors, a former member of the Northeast 10 (NE10) Conference, moved to NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) prior to the 2019 season.

Highlights

  • Senior running back Jaidin Haynes hauled in the lone touchdown pass in the contest; an 18-yard reception.
  • Senior linebacker Aidan Noke led the tackling efforts with eight total tackles, including seven solo.
  • Senior defensive back Jonathan Joseph notched the Hawks' lone interception.
  • Senior defensive lineman Nick Johnson forced a Merrimack fumble, which was recovered by the Hawks' freshman linebacker Nick Darling.
  • Senior Frank Schmitt and junior Jon Hosney recorded tackles for a loss.
  • Senior defensive back Hugo Silsby and fifth year defensive lineman Matt Smith each notched pass breakups.
  • Senior punter Thomas Murray averaged 46.2 yards per punt, with a long of 52.

Merrimack got on the board 6:40 into the game, and added three points at the end of the opening quarter on a 29-yard field goal to lead 10-0 after 15 minutes of play. The Warriors led 17-0 at halftime.

Just over six minutes into the second half, Merrimack extended its lead to 24 with a rushing touchdown. The Hawks were able to get in for six as senior Jaidin Haynes secured the lone touchdown of the outing for the visitors on an 18-yard hookup with junior Drew Forkner. Merrimack sealed the win with a pick-six.

The Hawks enter their bye week, but will return to the gridiron in their NE10 opener on Friday, Sep. 19 against Assumption. Kickoff from Kelly Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
