Atherton Nets Game-Winner to Complete Comeback over No. 25 Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team improved to 3-0 in Northeast 10 play, defeating No. 25 Adelphi University, 2-1, at Motamed Field on Saturday. Junior Daniella Atherton netted the game-winner in the 87th minute, as the Hawks scored two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the preseason runner-up.

Highlights
  • Atherton scored her first career game-winner and her second goal of the season, while junior Camryn Doyle scored her second goal of the season.
  • Freshman Connie Patturelli recorded her second assist, and senior Nina Muir tallied her first assist.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Swidorski allowed one goal and made four saves to improve to 4-1-1 in net this season.
  • Saint Anselm improves to 4-16-1 all-time against Adelphi, marking the Hawks' second win over the Panthers in the past 15 years and their first since 2021.
  • This is the first 3-0-0 start for the Hawks in NE10 play since 2023, when Saint Anselm won its first four conference matchups.
  • This is the first win over a United Soccer Coaches Poll-ranked opponent since October 28, 2021, when the Hawks defeated No. 12 Southern New Hampshire, 1-0 at Melucci Field.
How it Happened
Swidorski made her first save of the match in the 26th minute but was bested in the 37th when the Panthers had a long stretching pass down the left sideline get past the defense, leading to a one-on-one with Bethany Solari and Swidorski, with Solari netting the goal.

The first shot on net for the Hawks came in the 59th minute when freshman Nicole Schneider ripped a right-footed shot from outside of the box, nearly sneaking it over the Panthers' goalie's head, but it was deflected upward and out of play at the last second.

Doyle's goal came in the 66th minute when a mishit clear from Adelphi's goalie went directly to Muir, who lofted a pass toward Doyle, who had plenty of open space in the box, after making a defender miss, to convert on a right-footed shot to tie the score, 1-1.

Swidorski made a game-saving stop in the 76th minute after a pair of nice moves by Madison Apicella freed her up from the Hawks' defense, but Swidorski made a diving save to her right to keep the score tied, 1-1.

Patturelli got by a trio of Adelphi defenders in the 87th minute, setting up Atherton for an open look with her shot floating over the outstretched arm of the Panthers' goalie to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead, this being the game-winner as the Saint Anselm defense held on for the final three minutes of the match.
