No. 20 Mercy Shuts Out Women’s Soccer

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team had its three-game win streak come to an end, falling to No. 20 Mercy University, 1-0, at Melucci Field on senior day in a non-conference matchup.

Highlights
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Swidorski played 75 minutes in net, making three saves, while senior goalie Amelia Hohos took the loss, falling to 0-1-0 on the season after allowing the game-winner.
  • Senior Nina Muir led the offensive efforts for the Hawks, recording five shots with two on goal. Muir also had a shot ricochet off the crossbar for a near goal.
  • Classmate Madison DiNapoli had the only other shot on goal despite the Hawks having multiple chances, with many going just wide of the net.
  • The Hawks fall to 1-3-2 all-time against the Mavericks and are now 0-2-1 against ranked opponents this season.
How it Happened

Swidorski made the first save of the game in the 18th minute after some stout defense from both teams finally let up, but the attempt from the Mavericks was secured by the Hawks' goalkeeper.

The first shot on goal for the Hawks came in the 28th minute, just a few minutes after Muir checked into the game, but her attempt was denied by Mercy goalkeeper Anneliese Becker.

Mercy found the back of the net on their first shot on goal of the second half, as Hailey Metzger lofted a prayer from nearly 30 yards out that sailed just over the outstretched arm of Hohos to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

Another deep shot for the Mavericks nearly made the score 2-0, but the ball ricocheted off the woodwork in the 59th minute.

Despite not scoring, both Muir and senior Zarina Pinto had a pair of shots miss the mark by the smallest of margins, and that would be the difference for the Hawks, as Saint Anselm fell in the non-conference matchup, 1-0.
